This item consists of copies of correspondence, minutes, and consultations, cited in, or enclosed with, political letters from the Government of Bombay From c. 1668-1858, the East India Company’s administration in the city of Bombay [Mumbai] and western India. From 1858-1947, a subdivision of the British Raj. It was responsible for British relations with the Gulf and Red Sea regions. [Mumbai]. It is the second in a series of two items on Lieutenant Dominicetti and Mocha (the other is IOR/F/4/690/18908). The principal correspondents are: the Government of Bombay From c. 1668-1858, the East India Company’s administration in the city of Bombay [Mumbai] and western India. From 1858-1947, a subdivision of the British Raj. It was responsible for British relations with the Gulf and Red Sea regions. ; Captain John Richard Lumley of HMS Topaz , Senior Officer in the Red Sea; and Captain William Bruce, Government Agent.

The item concerns:

• The punitive expedition against Mocha on account of the treatment of Lieutenant Bartholomew Dominicetti
• An account of the blockade and bombardment of Mocha, including a return of those killed or injured in the action (ff 264-265 and ff 316-317)
• The negotiations between Bruce and the new Dola [Governor] of Mocha, Ameer Futhullah el Mahdee [Amir Futhullah al-Mahdi]
• The treaty between the British and the Imaum of Senna [Mahdi ‘Abdullāh al-Qāsimī One of the ruling families of the United Arab Emirates; also used to refer to a confederation of seafaring Arabs led by the Qāsimī tribe from Ras al Khaima. , Imam of Yemen] which covers: rights of British subjects in Yemen; rights of the Resident at the Factory An East India Company trading post. in Mocha; duties payable by British subjects at Mocha
• A discussion of the influence of the Ottoman Empire through the Viceroy of Egypt on Yemen
• The appointment of Lieutenant George Robson as Acting Resident at Mocha, and instructions to him.
