Content

This part of the volume consists of a copy of an enclosure to a despatch from the Government of Bombay’s Secret Department to the Secret Committee Pre-1784, the Committee responsible for protecting East India Company shipping. Post-1784, its main role was to transmit communications between the Board of Control and the Company's Indian governments on matters requiring secrecy. , Number 73 of 1843, dated 31 October 1843. The enclosure is dated 13 August 1843, and consists of a letter from HM Chargé d’Affaires, Tehran (Lieutenant-Colonel Justin Sheil), relating to affairs in Tehran, including the return of the Shah of Persia [Iran] to Tehran.

Enclosed within the letter are further letters from Sheil, which are mainly addressed to the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs (the Earl of Abderdeen, i.e. George Hamilton-Gordon, 4th Earl of Aberdeen).
