6 Asbestos. This mineral, which-fetches in the London market from ^20 to ^80 per-
tdn, according to its quality, has been found by Mr. Stahl in the neighbourhood ot'Kirmam
Instructions have been sent to General Houtum-Schindler, the Director of Mining Operations, to
make arrangements to work it at once. Although the situation is distant from a seaport, yet the
value of Asbestos is such, that it will bear heavy transit and shipping charges and yet leave a large
profit to the exporters.
7. Iron. This exists in large quantities and of excellent quality in many parts of Persia,
but the Corporation has felt that great caution is necessary, as it cannot be worked with advantage
except in the immediate vicinity of coal, and the machinery for blast furnaces and rolling mills is too
costly for them to undertake without a greater certainty of success than the present demand for iron
in Persia seems to warrant. The question of the profitable working of iron, or the cession of the
Corporation's rights in this mineral to others, will not, however, be lost sight of. It may be noted,
that Anthracite Coal has been found of excellent quality within a few miles of enormous and rich
iron deposits in the neighbourhood of Kirman.
8. Lead. —Numerous Lead Mines have been discovered, but it has not been possible so
ar to take measures for their working.
Miscellaneous. —Several other minerals of importance and value have come undei the
consideration of the Board, but as the arrangements for their working are not yet completed, it
would be premature to discuss them. Specimens of the following minerals have been received in
London from the various engineers, as well as a great number retained at Teheran Crude
Petroleum, Asbestos, Copper Ore, Arsenical Nickel, Sulphuret of Antimony, and Grey Cobalt.
On the whole, the Board of Directors look with confidence to the future of the Corporation,
The difficulties in the exploitation of Persia are great, but much satisfactory progress has been
made, and with time and patience, the Board trust that they may be able to place befoie their
Shareholders satisfactory and profitable results.
Cumulative Dividend. —The negotiations with the Imperial Bank of Persia, to
which allusion was made by the Chairman in his speech of 29th July, 1890, have been concluded,
and the Directors have much pleasure in announcing that the position of the Shareholders of the
Corporation has been greatly improved by the concession made by the Persian Bank, allowing to
them a Preferential Cumulative Dividend of 10 per cent, per annum, up to 33^- per cent., on the
paid-up capital of the Preferred Ordinary Shares.

The first part (26 March 1890-27 March 1892) is mostly comprised of received correspondence regarding Curzon's appointment to the board of directors of the recently formed Persian Bank Mining Rights Corporation and the company's interests in mines and mining rights in Persia. Also included in this part are facsimiles of company correspondence and reports, forwarded to Curzon by the company's Secretary, Lewis Hamilton, concerning the company's affairs, with discussion of existing and potential mining sites in Persia. Notable correspondents in this part include Edward Albert Sassoon of David Sassoon and Company, as well as fellow board members and other representatives and associates of the Persian Bank Mining Rights Corporation such as Lewis Hamilton, Sir Lepel Henry Griffin, and Albert Houtum-Schindler.
The second part (1 July 1889-20 December 1892) consists of Curzon's own handwritten notes plus a selection of reports, printed papers, newspaper cuttings, and correspondence, not only on mining and mining rights in Persia, but also regarding the affairs of the Persian Bank Mining Rights Corporation. It includes a list of those mines that are privately-owned and those that have been given in lease by the Persian Government, as well as details of Persian mines that are at the disposal of the Imperial Bank of Persia. Papers directly relating to the Persian Bank Mining Rights Corporation include copies of a memorandum and articles of association, as well as circulars, balance sheets, and a copy of extensive correspondence between the company and Houtum-Schindler. Also included is a copy of the general report of another company, the Persian Road and Transport Company, dated March 1891.
Among the papers are four plans: three of the Elburz [Alborz] mountains (folios 33, 36 and 45) and one showing transport routes across Persia (folio 266).
The German language material consists of three book titles cited by Houtum-Schindler.
