Edmund Barrow considered that this sudden ajid-'Cnexpected

India was warned in the 'above sense but instructed to take
no action without further orders.
On the same date a report was received from the Resident nfl
at Bushire that an informer, by name Mahomet Amin, had
produced copies bf cypher telegramsptoich he stated were
sent in July by Enver Bey to the Arab Ibn Baud notifying
despatch of arms amdiunition and Officers for training his
men. In further telegrams Enver Bey informed the Vali of
Basra that munitions of War were being sent to him under
the German flag and that German and other emissaries were
on their way to preach a Jehad in Afghanistan, Baluchistan
and India. The truth of the statement regarding Ibn Baud
Tel dy,26/9/l4was, however, considered doubtful by the Resident.

*dy,30/9/14 became necessary to postpone the sailing of the Convoy
''for Europet with Expedition "A”) which was to have left
Bombay early to October and in which it had been expectea
that Force ”D Tt might be included.
On the 2nd October the Cabinet decided to take action in
the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. and India was desired to despatch the
advanced troops indicated above on the 10th October with
the rest of the Convoy,but with sealed orders diverting
the to the Shatt-el-Arab,and to get ready the remainder
of the 6th Division. ^

This file contains working drafts of confidential prints, correspondence and telegrams from the room of Sir Edmund Barrow, Military Secretary in the India Office The department of the British Government to which the Government of India reported between 1858 and 1947. The successor to the Court of Directors. , collected for the Mesopotamian Commission which was convened to examine the causes of the besieging and surrender of the Indian Expeditionary Force in Kut-el-Amara [Al Kūt].

The papers cover a range of topics and include the following: General Townshend's assessment of the situation after the Battle of Kut-el-Amara; a précis of correspondence relating to the origins and development of the Mesopotamia expedition; and a collection (ff 396-399) of private telegrams between the Secretary of State for India and the Viceroy, prior to the outbreak of war with Turkey.

The file also includes some tables showing the strength of General Townshend's force at Ctesiphon (folio 111) as well as the Indian Expeditionary Force 'D' (In Mesopotamia) Troops of the 6th Poona Division (folio 114).

Correspondents include: General Sir John Nixon; Major-General Charles Vere Ferrers Townshend; the Viceroy of India; officials of the Admiralty; officials of the War Office.
