The Force arrived off the Shatt-el-Arab on the 4th
Hovr but its disembarkation was apparently delayed
by bad weather while for the same reason telegraphic
communication was interrupted. On the 6th Hovr.however,
after the Havy had silenced the white stone Fort on the
right bank at the mouth of the river a combined force
landed at the telegraph station without opposition and
occupi^ the town. The Turks were reported to have lost
one officer and eight men and retired up the river after
destroying the telegraph instruments.
General Delamain left a detachment at Fao and followed!

at Saihan on the Turkish

termined attack on the British outposts. They were
held in check by the 117th Mahrattas and finally
routed by a counter attack with the 20th Punjabis and
a mountain battery. The enemy admitted a loss of 80
while our casualties included Maj R.Ducat,20th Punjabis
died of woui-ds; Capt H.F.Franks, 117th Mahrattas severe
ly woundedflater reported as TT doing well"); Jemadae
Jhanda Singh,slightly wounded (This Officer cannot be
identified in any unit of the Force and was possibly
attached). Among the rank and file 1 sepoy Term used in English to refer to an Indian infantryman. Carries some derogatory connotations as sometimes used as a means of othering and emphasising race, colour, origins, or rank. was killed

This file contains working drafts of confidential prints, correspondence and telegrams from the room of Sir Edmund Barrow, Military Secretary in the India Office The department of the British Government to which the Government of India reported between 1858 and 1947. The successor to the Court of Directors. , collected for the Mesopotamian Commission which was convened to examine the causes of the besieging and surrender of the Indian Expeditionary Force in Kut-el-Amara [Al Kūt].

The papers cover a range of topics and include the following: General Townshend's assessment of the situation after the Battle of Kut-el-Amara; a précis of correspondence relating to the origins and development of the Mesopotamia expedition; and a collection (ff 396-399) of private telegrams between the Secretary of State for India and the Viceroy, prior to the outbreak of war with Turkey.

The file also includes some tables showing the strength of General Townshend's force at Ctesiphon (folio 111) as well as the Indian Expeditionary Force 'D' (In Mesopotamia) Troops of the 6th Poona Division (folio 114).
