Secretary in a Minute dated expressed his opinion
that it might he desirable to eject any troops still
there and to occupy the District - temporarily at any
rate. Sir Edmund Barrow thought that the political re
sults of such a move would be good as the places men
tioned were centres of trade and communication between
Baghdad and the Arab tribes whose severance from direct
Turkish influence it was our desire and object to ef
fect. The easiest approach would be by the Euphrates
and the occupation of the three points Basra - Kurna -
and Nasirieh would completly secure our position from
an attack from the North.
The Secretary of State accepted these views and they
were communicated to India.
rrom the 11th to the end of December, and later, Sir
A.Barrett’s daily telegrams reported all well and quiet,
except for some sniping into Camp between the 20th and
24th when Jemadar Shiudayal Singh, 7th Hajputs.and
a few other men were killed and wounded .
n he Sirmur Sappers and Miners and the Survey and Search
light Sections arrived at Basra on the 28th Deer and
on the 29th 2 Battalions were sent to Kurna as a re
inforcement in consequence of a reported hostile gath
ering.

Many rumours were received towards the end of Deer and
the beginning of Jany from India,Mesopotamia,Aden &
Egypt as to the movements of Turkish troops and the
estimates of strength at, and en route to, Baghdad
varied from a few thousands including Arabs, Gendarmerie,
and Reservists to Army Corps. The most persistent re
port was that the Xll Turkish Corps, which had previous-
r
ly moved from Mosul to Aleppo was returning to Mesopo
tamia and was said to be composed of the 35thfArabs) 3b
