Afghanistan. Tho Amir is reported to have stated in open Iterbar
that the British were fighting in a Just cause and that it
would be sinful to di- turb them by raising trouble on
their border t such a time.
The Bushian Consular Agent reported ( 22nd August) that a
Siotan.
emll party of 6 Germans, 2 or 3 Turkish Officers and 6
or 7 Afghans had crossed the border into Afghanistan at
Chaferig and that the pursuing Cossacks had failed to over
take them.One of the Afghans is reported to be named
'Vlir Hast f frldi and is supposed to be perhaps tho Jemadar
of t he 58th Bifles who deserted in I'ranoe.
The above was probably a part of a gathering oi Germans
which had been reported as near Tabas about the end of
Ji>ly and which tho Foreign Office at Simla believed to
number, with Turks ao, some 250 men with 6 machine guns*
and perhaps on their way to Afghanistan via Ghazik.or^gJ}-
( Local reports from hashed # Sistan Ac were to the effect
that th^ gathering would novo by various routes or that
tho object might be to have a German centre of influence
in each Persian district). Of these the Germans were 29,
Austrians 16, Indians 26 and the rest Persians Ac.

This file contains working drafts of confidential prints, correspondence and telegrams from the room of Sir Edmund Barrow, Military Secretary in the India Office The department of the British Government to which the Government of India reported between 1858 and 1947. The successor to the Court of Directors. , collected for the Mesopotamian Commission which was convened to examine the causes of the besieging and surrender of the Indian Expeditionary Force in Kut-el-Amara [Al Kūt].

The papers cover a range of topics and include the following: General Townshend's assessment of the situation after the Battle of Kut-el-Amara; a précis of correspondence relating to the origins and development of the Mesopotamia expedition; and a collection (ff 396-399) of private telegrams between the Secretary of State for India and the Viceroy, prior to the outbreak of war with Turkey.

The file also includes some tables showing the strength of General Townshend's force at Ctesiphon (folio 111) as well as the Indian Expeditionary Force 'D' (In Mesopotamia) Troops of the 6th Poona Division (folio 114).
