From your private telegram of 15tli October, this hospital is to be one of 500 beds,
but medical personnel asked for, exclusive of nurses, is more than double sanctioned
sc'de and must place official Indian hospital, that you have decided to send to
England from France, at a great disadvantage, and therefore seems not only un
necessary but inadvisable.
No. 5.
Telegram from Secretary of State for India to Viceroy,
dated 20th November 1914.
Private. I understand that War Office telegraphed yesterday to Duff, asking for
extra Indian personnel, ward-orderlies and cooks for hospitals in England. I should
be glad if arrangements could be made as early as possible, as matter is really urgent.

dated 21st November 191 I .
Trivate. Your private telegram of the 20th instant. Hospital personnel for
England. We are doing our very best to improvise; all our permanent hospital
personnel has long been exhausted.

Telegram from Secretary of State for India to Viceroy,
dated 20th November 1914.
1121. Please keep me fully informed of all arrangements for transport from
Expedition “ D ” of sick and wounded. Names of British officers and destination
should bo telegraphed to me when they are embarked on hospital ship or transport.
Bar reit has not yet reported names of British rank and hie killed nor Indian
officers.

Telegram from Viceroy to Secretary of State for India,
dated bth December 1914.
H. 2341. Your 1421 of 30th November. In continuation of my IT. 2254 of
30th November. General Barrett has been instructed to telegraph names and
•destinations of all British officers embarked on hospital ships and transports to you.
He telegraphs that 250 British, Indian and Turkish wounded are being returned
, shortly by transport Erinpura to Bombay. Arrangements for their accommodation
are complete. Provision of a suitable light-draught vessel to be fitted up as a
hospital ship for Force “D” is under consideration. Loyaltij was ear-marked for
this force, as, although unable to cross the bar, it was hoped to trans-ship sick outside
the bar, but General Barrett recently reported this impracticable.

Telegram from Secretary of State for India to Viceroy, Army Departnient,
dated 20th April 1915.
1801. Please inform me what special comforts or equipment are issued to British
soldiers with Force “ D.” Are tinted spectacles, &c. mentioned on page 13, Field
Service Kegulations, Manual British Infantry, issued? Also spine protectors?

Telegram from Viceroy to Secretary of State for India, dated
27th April 1915.
IT. 4509. Your telegram dated 20th April. Supplies of following special
comforts and equipment arranged for British troops of Force “ D.” Sun spectacles,
.spine protectors, mosquito curtains, mineral water plant and weekly supply of fresh
vegetables from Indiij, and electric lights and fans. Ice available at Basra. They
have received also the more varied ration introduced in 1909 and improved in 1911.

This file contains working drafts of confidential prints, correspondence and telegrams from the room of Sir Edmund Barrow, Military Secretary in the India Office The department of the British Government to which the Government of India reported between 1858 and 1947. The successor to the Court of Directors. , collected for the Mesopotamian Commission which was convened to examine the causes of the besieging and surrender of the Indian Expeditionary Force in Kut-el-Amara [Al Kūt].

The papers cover a range of topics and include the following: General Townshend's assessment of the situation after the Battle of Kut-el-Amara; a précis of correspondence relating to the origins and development of the Mesopotamia expedition; and a collection (ff 396-399) of private telegrams between the Secretary of State for India and the Viceroy, prior to the outbreak of war with Turkey.

The file also includes some tables showing the strength of General Townshend's force at Ctesiphon (folio 111) as well as the Indian Expeditionary Force 'D' (In Mesopotamia) Troops of the 6th Poona Division (folio 114).

Correspondents include: General Sir John Nixon; Major-General Charles Vere Ferrers Townshend; the Viceroy of India; officials of the Admiralty; officials of the War Office.
