Extract of a letter from John Hine, Acting Resident at Bagdad [Baghdad], to Sir Harford Jones, late Resident at Bagdad. The extract mentions: rumours that Jones has been captured by the French on his way back to England; an incident in Constantinople [Istanbul] involving someone called 'Secunder', described as a successor of Suliman Bacha [probably Sulayman Pasha An Ottoman title used after the names of certain provincial governors, high-ranking officials and military commanders. the Great of Baghdad] who is keen to cultivate a friendship with the British; and a report that Abdullah Pacha [Abdullah Pasha An Ottoman title used after the names of certain provincial governors, high-ranking officials and military commanders. al-Azm], Governor of Damascus, was turned back on his pilgrimage [to Mecca] by Saoud [Saud bin Abdul-Aziz bin Muhammad bin Saud].
