This item consists of copies of correspondence, consultations, resolutions, and minutes cited in, or enclosed with, political letters from the Government of Bombay From c. 1668-1858, the East India Company’s administration in the city of Bombay [Mumbai] and western India. From 1858-1947, a subdivision of the British Raj. It was responsible for British relations with the Gulf and Red Sea regions. [Mumbai]. It was responsible for British relations with the Gulf and Red Sea regions. ; the Military Board of Bombay; Captain Stafford Bettesworth Haines, Political Agent A mid-ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Agency. in Aden; Lieutenant John Adee Curtis, Executive Engineer at Aden.
The item concerns the discovery at Aden of seven gold Islamic coins dating from around 1500-1711 CE, and an inscription in Himyaritic written in the ancient South Arabian script on a circular piece of well-polished white marble. The item contains transliterations and translations of the inscriptions on both faces of one of the coins, and two tracings of the Himyaritic inscription (at folios 699 and 703).
