Appendix.
Extracts from Secret Communist Journals.
(Printed at Tashkent, December 9th, 1922.)
1. “We have been compelled to print our journals at the time when paper
is available, therefore the irregular dating of journals will be apparent.
Journals will not now be dated weekly as heretofore.-^
2. (i Our work in Egypt. —Our agents have ably organised a strong com-
muoist party in Egypt which works under the name of ‘Liberty’! and this
party is to (bring forward ?) the Adly Pasha An Ottoman title used after the names of certain provincial governors, high-ranking officials and military commanders. . On our instructions this party
will work in order to secure the ultimate full independence of Egypt which will
lead to the complete removal of all .'British troops from Egypt and help on the
avowed principle of the ‘ open door ’ to be maintained.^
3. “ Our Service in Afghanistan. —Kushkhas given us a report concerning
the difficulties under which our agents work in Afghanistan. These agents were
working under special instructions from the Chief of our Political Department
in Tashkent and carried out orders very successfully, for some months parti-
cularly regarding movements on the Russo-Afghan frontier. They were in fact
our main link with Afghan frontier affairs but Afghan precautions unfortu
nately led to the arrest cf many of our well paid men. Some have managed to
escape to Russia and it is fortunate for them. On behalf of those who™ have
been caught we are endeavouring to clear them by giving assurances that no
such men were employed by us. They may suffer the penalty by death, but
of course they were well paid for their work.”
~ Tashkent, December 18th, 1922.
4. Filling up Budiemy’s Cavalry Corps. —It has been decided to strengthen
the 1st Cavalry Corps operating under Budierny in Eerghana, and for this
purpose we are sending men from the young communist ranks at Odessa,
Ekaterinoslav and Kharkov. ^
5. “ We are informed from Moscow that the question is likely to be raised
as to why the Sultan of Turkey was taken away from Constantinople under
British protection. ,,
6. “ Moscow intimates that the new money for 1923 is to be put in circula
tion on the 1st day of January. One hundred roubles of 1922 will be equal
to one 1923 rouble. So far we -have not seen a sample of this new paper
rouble.”

About this item

Content

The item consists of Part 1 of the subject file 1341/1921: 'Meshed Consular & Intelligence Diaries (1921-1922)'.

It contains numbered periodical (mainly weekly) reports relating to Persia [Iran], initially each called an 'Intelligence Summary' and later called a 'Meshed Intelligence Diary'. The reports cover the period of the week ending 1 January 1921 to the period ending 1 January 1923. They are initially issued by the British Military Mission, Meshed [Mashhad, also known as Mashad or Meshad], and later by the Military Attaché, Meshed. The intelligence summaries, and diaries, relate to political, foreign, military and diplomatic affairs in the locality and the neighbouring regions and are variously arranged under (chiefly) the following headings: 'Khorasan and North-East Persia'; 'Herat and Afghanistan'; 'Russian Turkistan'; 'Khorasan'; 'Cis-Frontier'; 'Trans-Frontier'; 'Afghanistan'; 'Bolshevik Garrisons'; 'Local'; 'Transcaspia'; 'Bokhara'; 'Tashkent'; 'Central Russia'; 'Khiva'; 'Ferghana'; 'General'; and 'Samarkand'. The summaries often include appendices which are usually extracts of local and national newspapers published in the regions and countries of interest, including Nabat , Rosta , Izvestia , Ittifaq-i-Islam , Bednota, Prolitarii , Sharq-i-Iran, and Pravda . Other appendices contain details of Bolshevik Garrisons in the region.
