Abdul Aziz. In 1921 he was appointed by the Bolsheviks with
whom he associated, Chief of Police at Karshi. Late in 1921 he
was dismissed from the police service and on the appearance of

he joined up with him. He is regarded as a capable
man and although not a soldier by profession he has displayed
considerable ability in this connection. His following is now
estimated at 6,000 strong.
(2) Ali Beza Elfendi, aged 40; Ahmad Effendi, aged 38and Osman
Effendi, aged 41.—All Turks w r ho were sent as instructors to Tash
kent in 1917. After the occupation of Bokhara by the Bolsheviks
they were transferred to Bokhara. Osman was appointed to
command the Bokharan Militia and Ali was his 2nd-in-Command.
Ahmad was a machine gun instructor. They all subsequently
joined up with Enver

(3) Bahman Qul Beg, Uzbeg, aged 59.—Was for over 30 years chief
artillery officer to the Amir of Bokhara. He fought against the
Bolsheviks when the Amir made his escape. With a following of
350 men he fled towards Khiva and has since actively conducted
raids from the north. Although he never actually joined up with

he co-ordinated in several attacks which were planned
by the latter. He is highly respected by all Turkomans.
(1) and (2) operate in the area south of Samarkand and their combined total
strength is, at the moment, estimated at 30,000 men all armed and well
clothed.
19. Beference Diary 43, paragraph 15.—Kitab was retaken by the
Bolsheviks about November 28th, and is now being strongly fortified.
20. Beference Diary 37, Appendix 2—The following corrections should
be made to the list of Indians residing in Bokhara :—
Delete. —Ghulam Muhammad and Pir Bakhsh (arrived Meshed Decem
ber 6th).
Add. —Seyed Ahmad, Punjabi, trader, brother of No. 17.
Muhammad Usman, Punjabi, trader.
Khoop Chand, works in a garden.
Hari Singh, shop-keeper.
Jhangan, shop-keeper.
21. Beference Diary 43, paragraph 6.—Orders for the 5th Turkistan
Begiment were altered; this unit has now gone to Samarkand.
22. Orders have been issued for the transfer of the 2nd Bokharan Bifle
Begiment from Kagan to Kizil Arvat. The ultimate destination of this
unit is believed to be the Caucasus.
23. Samarkand, December 6th. —No decisive action against the rebels has
so far been reported, but a force consisting of 5,000 troops has been specially
organised for this purpose. Information goes to show, however, that lack of
supplies is preventing the actual commencement of operations. Two minor
attacks by the followers of Daniel Lazgi on the outskirts of Samarkand took
place during the first week of December, but these were easily repulsed.
TASHKENT.
24. December 3rd .—Orders have been issued for the transfer of the follow
ing units from Tashkent for duty on the railway between Orenburg and
Tashkent:—
4th Briansky Bifle Begiment.
7th Cherniyevosky Cavalry Begiment.
21st Moscow Infantry Begiment.
Attacks on trains containing military stores and rations have been
frequent recently in this area.

The summaries often include appendices which are usually extracts of local and national newspapers published in the regions and countries of interest, including Nabat , Rosta , Izvestia , Ittifaq-i-Islam , Bednota, Prolitarii , Sharq-i-Iran, and Pravda . Other appendices contain details of Bolshevik Garrisons in the region.
