NOVEMBER 1922.
Local.
1. Persian Sarakhs, November 26th .—The flight of Karim Khan, Baluch
(Diaries 25, 26, 27, 28), to Russian territory on November 24th, resulted in two
skirmishes with Persian troops, one bloodless and the other causing casualties
to both sides. In an attempt to recover his cattle on November 26th, the
second occasion, Karim Khan lost two killed and the Persian troops two killed
and wounded.
Reinforcements from Meshed, under Lieutenant-Colonel Mehdi |Khan,
Chief Artillery Officer (50 cavalry with ammunition and two machine guns)
were despatched on November 26th, with orders to reach Sarakhs in three
days owing to the critical nature of the situation.
The remaining followers of Karim Khan who were in custody at Sarakhs,
the most important of them being, Safar Khan, Tuman Khan and Husain Khan,
are expected to be the cause of an attempt to effect their release.
Karim Khan’s following is estimated about 400 strong and his force is
considered large enough to cause anxiety to the Persian authorities. He is
reliably reported to have the support of the Bolsheviks who are stated to have
already supplied him with 250 rifles and considerable ammunition.
General.
2. Reports received during the past week bear out those previously received
regarding the difference of opinion between Enver Pasha An Ottoman title used after the names of certain provincial governors, high-ranking officials and military commanders. and the rebel leaders
concerning peace with the Bolsheviks.
3. Apart from the continued struggle in the Eerghana province, there is
an unsettled atmosphere north and south of Bokhara and towards Khiva.
Orenburg is also affected and reports of rebel activities in that area are
frequent.
4. Hasan Effendi and Usman Beg have both agreed to oppose the Bolshe
viks and it appears that fighting in the vicinity of Bokhara has already
commenced.
Usman Beg, who is a relative of Eaizullah Khawja, quarrelled with the
latter about six months ago and joined Enver Pasha An Ottoman title used after the names of certain provincial governors, high-ranking officials and military commanders. with a following of about
500 men.
5. The exact whereabouts of Enver Pasha An Ottoman title used after the names of certain provincial governors, high-ranking officials and military commanders. are unknown. After the con
ference at Baisun he is again reported to have gone towards Bokhara; he is
believed either to be in hiding for fear of the rebels he has just left, or to have
fled to Afghanistan with the aid of the Bolsheviks. No mention of E nver’s
death is ever mentioned.
’ ” 6. According to several reports, there are indications that the Bolsheviks
are concentrating troops at Kagan and Samarkand with a view to attacking
the rebels to the South.
7. All reports confirm the commandeering of horses throughout Turkistan
and the general belief that the numbers of cavalry are to be increased every
where.
8. Dysentery is playing havoc both amongst the troops and the civil popu
lation of Turkistan and the percentage of deaths is very high.
Moscow has been asked by Tashkent to send medical aid as the work is
more than enough for the present hospital staffs.

About this item

Content

The item consists of Part 1 of the subject file 1341/1921: 'Meshed Consular & Intelligence Diaries (1921-1922)'.

It contains numbered periodical (mainly weekly) reports relating to Persia [Iran], initially each called an 'Intelligence Summary' and later called a 'Meshed Intelligence Diary'. The reports cover the period of the week ending 1 January 1921 to the period ending 1 January 1923. They are initially issued by the British Military Mission, Meshed [Mashhad, also known as Mashad or Meshad], and later by the Military Attaché, Meshed. The intelligence summaries, and diaries, relate to political, foreign, military and diplomatic affairs in the locality and the neighbouring regions and are variously arranged under (chiefly) the following headings: 'Khorasan and North-East Persia'; 'Herat and Afghanistan'; 'Russian Turkistan'; 'Khorasan'; 'Cis-Frontier'; 'Trans-Frontier'; 'Afghanistan'; 'Bolshevik Garrisons'; 'Local'; 'Transcaspia'; 'Bokhara'; 'Tashkent'; 'Central Russia'; 'Khiva'; 'Ferghana'; 'General'; and 'Samarkand'. The summaries often include appendices which are usually extracts of local and national newspapers published in the regions and countries of interest, including Nabat , Rosta , Izvestia , Ittifaq-i-Islam , Bednota, Prolitarii , Sharq-i-Iran, and Pravda . Other appendices contain details of Bolshevik Garrisons in the region.
