22. An aeroplane, sent from Samarkand on November 7th, to reconnoitre
the position of the rebels operating south of Shar-i-Sabz, made a forced
landing and was captured by the rebels. The aeroplane carried one machine
gun.

1 23. The propaganda department is reported to have increased its staff.
The training of orators is also being carried out and the printing presses are
busy turning out pamphlets printed in all languages.
24. Eebel activities in the vicinity of Samarkand are also reported, under
Daniel Lazgi.
25. Three men and one woman left Samarkand for Tashkent on Novem
ber 8th, to attend the Union of Islam conference there. (Diary 40, para
graph 8.)
27. Karshi, November 20th .—Keference Diary 40, paragraph 17. Eepairs
on the Karshi-Kagan line have now been completed. Trains are running
thrice weekly.
27. Termez .—Eeference Diary 40, paragraph 21. Two large guns
accompanied this detachment which was sent from Tashkent. The men are
said to belong to No. 2 Turkistan Eegiment.
Perghana.
28. There has been no cessation of fighting according to reports dated
November 7th, and Marghilan, Kokand and Andijan are being constantly
attacked. The rebels operating in the vicinity of Andijan are in two groups
under Hamrah Qul and Perim Qul who work under the orders of Sher
Muhammad. Andijan has been the scene of severe fighting lately, but the
Bolsheviks have so far remained in possession.
Only the towns on the railway line are in possession of the Bolsheviks, and
two armoured cars are patrolling the line from Khojent to Andijan.
29. Extracts from Secret Communist Journals are given as an appendix to
this Diary.

The summaries often include appendices which are usually extracts of local and national newspapers published in the regions and countries of interest, including Nabat , Rosta , Izvestia , Ittifaq-i-Islam , Bednota, Prolitarii , Sharq-i-Iran, and Pravda . Other appendices contain details of Bolshevik Garrisons in the region.
