Appendix 1.
Extracts from Secret Communist Journals.
Tashkent, November ^
1. “ Our continued friendship witli our Afghan neighbours has enabled
us to make a considerable reduction in our garrison at the important frontier
post, Kushk. This will allow us to concentrate these troops more usefully
against rebel bands in the mountains south of Samarkand. The danger of
allowing these bands to go too far is realized by us and we mean to take steps
to crush them.”
Our Military Obligations.
2. “ The Soviet Government has survived a most difficult period and we
have come through a severe crisis but we must have patience before final suc
cess is realized. We must maintain our old Eed Army which is the backbone
of our real Eed Soviet power. Its order of battle is weak we admit but not
for that reason have we decided to make the following alterations in periods
of service. The idea is to improve service generally and the revised periods
will become operative at once :—
1. Infantry, Artillery, Cavalry .

After serving the periods above described men will be placed on the reserve
of the Eed Army till they reach the age of 40 years.”

About this item
- Content
The item consists of Part 1 of the subject file 1341/1921: 'Meshed Consular & Intelligence Diaries (1921-1922)'.
It contains numbered periodical (mainly weekly) reports relating to Persia [Iran], initially each called an 'Intelligence Summary' and later called a 'Meshed Intelligence Diary'. The reports cover the period of the week ending 1 January 1921 to the period ending 1 January 1923. They are initially issued by the British Military Mission, Meshed [Mashhad, also known as Mashad or Meshad], and later by the Military Attaché, Meshed. The intelligence summaries, and diaries, relate to political, foreign, military and diplomatic affairs in the locality and the neighbouring regions and are variously arranged under (chiefly) the following headings: 'Khorasan and North-East Persia'; 'Herat and Afghanistan'; 'Russian Turkistan'; 'Khorasan'; 'Cis-Frontier'; 'Trans-Frontier'; 'Afghanistan'; 'Bolshevik Garrisons'; 'Local'; 'Transcaspia'; 'Bokhara'; 'Tashkent'; 'Central Russia'; 'Khiva'; 'Ferghana'; 'General'; and 'Samarkand'. The summaries often include appendices which are usually extracts of local and national newspapers published in the regions and countries of interest, including Nabat , Rosta , Izvestia , Ittifaq-i-Islam , Bednota, Prolitarii , Sharq-i-Iran, and Pravda . Other appendices contain details of Bolshevik Garrisons in the region.
