1. From “ Bed Land,” Tashkent, October 28th, 1922.
) “ Reports from our agents in India tell us that recent disorders there is
the result of their work. Agitation in Madras has caused disturbances and the
people are plundering. Brother Communists we must give our serious atten
tion to India and see that our propaganda does not slacken off India k on

• “ The first duty of the Soviet Government is to discover the root of anti-
Soviet organizations m Turkistan and elsewhere which are causing much
trouble, particularly in Turkistan which is regarded as the chief centre

Merv and Askabad also at Moscow and Kiev. These organizations have
representatives from all classes and even Soviet troops are associated with them.
Many arrests have been made which included, Commissars, public servants
post and telegraph officials and financial officials. All arrested people are
accused of conspiring against Soviet power: The headquarters of the revolu
tionary organization has been discovered in a village in Turkistan, but it is
known to have its working staff in Moscow.”

The intelligence summaries, and diaries, relate to political, foreign, military and diplomatic affairs in the locality and the neighbouring regions and are variously arranged under (chiefly) the following headings: 'Khorasan and North-East Persia'; 'Herat and Afghanistan'; 'Russian Turkistan'; 'Khorasan'; 'Cis-Frontier'; 'Trans-Frontier'; 'Afghanistan'; 'Bolshevik Garrisons'; 'Local'; 'Transcaspia'; 'Bokhara'; 'Tashkent'; 'Central Russia'; 'Khiva'; 'Ferghana'; 'General'; and 'Samarkand'. The summaries often include appendices which are usually extracts of local and national newspapers published in the regions and countries of interest, including Nabat , Rosta , Izvestia , Ittifaq-i-Islam , Bednota, Prolitarii , Sharq-i-Iran, and Pravda . Other appendices contain details of Bolshevik Garrisons in the region.
