DIARY No. 37, FOR THE PERIOD ENDING 30th
OCTOBER 1922.
General.
1. It is reported that the Bolsheviks are endeavouring to remove all
ofiBcers who have served with the White Army, whom they suspect of being in
sympathy with the rebel movement, thus removing a danger which might take
a more practical form.
Afghanistan.
2. October 25th .—Bifles which are reported to have arrived in Northern
Afghanistan at the end of August 1922, are now beinsr sold publicly. British
pattern are being sold at Tomans 10,000 Persian dinars, or a gold coin of that value. 120 each while Russian realize 60 to 70
Tomans 10,000 Persian dinars, or a gold coin of that value. each.
3. An arrival from Merv states that rumours are current there that
Afghan-Bolshevik relations are shaky and that the latter are very suspicious of
I the Afghans and Enver Pasha An Ottoman title used after the names of certain provincial governors, high-ranking officials and military commanders. .
Transcaspia.
4. Askabad, October Three hundred men of the 4,th Turkestan
Begiment left Askabad on October 19th, en route Tashkent.
5. Large quantities of ammunition have been transferred from Samarkand
to Askabad. This has given rise to considerable speculation as to the cause of
such transfer. Meanwhile it is given out that Headquarters of No. 1 Moscow
Bed Army will shortly be transferred from Samarkand to Askabad, but it is
conceivable that the bringing of this ammunition to Askabad may have
another motive behind it.
6. Live hundred volunteers have offered their services to aid Turkey.
These are stated to be joining the Caucasian volunteers at Baku.
7. Merv, October 24th .—The Greeco-Turko situation has enabled the
Bolshevik authorities to set local feeling against the British and Erench and
many volunteers have been enrolled for service with the Turkish Nationalists.
Propagandists have been sent out among Turkomans with a view to enlisting
them for the same purpose.
8. A report, which lacks confirmation, states that 12 Turks arrived at
Merv on October’20th, from Baku and left immediately for Kushk en route
Kabul. The reporter states that they are for service with the Afghan Army.

Bokhara.
9. Beports received during the past week indicate that Enver Pasha An Ottoman title used after the names of certain provincial governors, high-ranking officials and military commanders. is
now at Hissar, from which place he continues to plan raids on Bolshevik
centres. Erom the reports to hand concerning the conference (see Diary
No. 35, paragraph 9) held at Baisun, it is not apparent whether any definite
arrangement was concluded between the Bolshevik representatives and Enver,
but it is generally accepted that Enver rejected the Bolshevik offer to instal
him as Governor of Bokhara under Bolshevik control. The general opinion in
Bokhara is that fighting will be resumed very shortly. Enver appears to be
concentrating his efforts at the moment to prevent local supplies falling into
Bolshevik hands and has issued strict orders that on no account are supplies or
food of any kind to be given to the Bolsheviks.
