Askdbad {area), October 21st. —1,400 Cavalry, 4,600 Infantry (4,000
old troops, 2,000 recruits). Guns 8, machine guns 6, armoured cars 3, planes
2, motor lorries 6.
Merv, October 12th .—500 Cavalry, 2,500 Infantry. Guns, etc., no
change. (Bahram Ali motor lorries 6.)
Karshi, October 14th .—750 Cavalry, 3,250 Infantry. Guns 9, machine
guns 2, armoured car 1, planes 2, motor lorries 4. Units are—6th Cherniyevo,
5th Samara, 3rd Turkestan Rifles. All of No. 1 Moscow Red Army.
Khilif, October 11^.-400 Cavalry, 1,500 Infantry (out of latter 400
are employed as guards on the Oxus). Guns 3, machine guns 2, plane 1.
Katta Kurghan, October 12th .—900 Cavalry, 4,500 Infantry. Units are—
No. 2 Cherniyevo, 4th Tashkent, 3rd Samara, 6th Orenburg. All of No. 1
Moscow Red Army. Guns 9, machine guns 6, armoured car 1, motor lorries 4,

Headquarters Turkestan aviation is at Katta Kurghan where all damaged

The reports cover the period of the week ending 1 January 1921 to the period ending 1 January 1923. They are initially issued by the British Military Mission, Meshed [Mashhad, also known as Mashad or Meshad], and later by the Military Attaché, Meshed. The intelligence summaries, and diaries, relate to political, foreign, military and diplomatic affairs in the locality and the neighbouring regions and are variously arranged under (chiefly) the following headings: 'Khorasan and North-East Persia'; 'Herat and Afghanistan'; 'Russian Turkistan'; 'Khorasan'; 'Cis-Frontier'; 'Trans-Frontier'; 'Afghanistan'; 'Bolshevik Garrisons'; 'Local'; 'Transcaspia'; 'Bokhara'; 'Tashkent'; 'Central Russia'; 'Khiva'; 'Ferghana'; 'General'; and 'Samarkand'. The summaries often include appendices which are usually extracts of local and national newspapers published in the regions and countries of interest, including Nabat , Rosta , Izvestia , Ittifaq-i-Islam , Bednota, Prolitarii , Sharq-i-Iran, and Pravda . Other appendices contain details of Bolshevik Garrisons in the region.
