OCTOBER 1922.
Local.
1. The Russian effort to make use of the Turkish victory as propa°andaj
is a very feeble one 4 The only reports heard so far are that British and
American troops were all killed when the Turks entered Smyrna, and all
property belonging to these two nations was destroyed. The British’ are also
credited with having sent a thousand aeroplanes to assist the Greeks.
Transcaspia
2. The Russians have forbidden export into Persia, said to be in
consequence of the Persian Government having stopped the-export of grain
into Russia. Lutfabad reports the frontier closed, and only persons in
possession of permits from the Russian Consul at Jdeshed are allowed to enter
Russia,
3. Reference Diary No. 34, paragraph 6. There is a considerable amount
of unrest amongst the Turkomans, owing to the announcement of the taxes
which are to be imposed on residents in Turkistan. The Turkomans are
anxious to arrange a representation to Tashkent to have the matter discussed
from their point of view.
4i. A society calling itself the ({ Union of Islam” is forming committees
in the towns of Turkistan. Members of the committees are Tartars, Khirghiz,
Sarts, Caucasians and Persians. The work of the society is Pan-Islamic.
Money is collected for the Turkish Nationalists, and recruits are enlisted for
service with the Turks. 250 men are said to have been enlisted aod already
sent to Turkey by the Charjui Committee.
5. Lutfabad, 6th October .—300 Russian troops with two small guns from
Tashkent passed going west.
6. Charjui, 26th September .—Reference Diary No. 32, paragraph 7.
The steamship “ Lenin ” has been refloated and towed to dock for repairs.
7 Detachments of Russian troops from the east are being sent every few
days by land and river to Kirki and Termez. The report states that it is
intended to collect a large force on the frontier before the winter closes the
river route.
Khiva.
8. A casual reports that after severe fighting between Khiva and Old
Khi va, which lasted several days, an armistice was arranged, when the Russian
representatives and those of Junaid Khan agreed to cease fighting for three
months, during which time the Russian troops would vacate Khiva. Junaid
Khan has been offered the Governorship of Khiva by the Russians, which he
refused, stating that he would ask his people to appoint their own governor.
At the present time all towns are in the hands of the Russians.
Bokhara,
9. Reports from Guzar (2nd October) and Kirki (1st October) state that
an armistice was arranged on the 22nd September with Enver Pasha An Ottoman title used after the names of certain provincial governors, high-ranking officials and military commanders. , and that
at Enver’s request six Russian representatives have been sent to Baisun to
discuss peace. It is said that the Russians are willing to appoint Enver Pasha An Ottoman title used after the names of certain provincial governors, high-ranking officials and military commanders.

The summaries often include appendices which are usually extracts of local and national newspapers published in the regions and countries of interest, including Nabat , Rosta , Izvestia , Ittifaq-i-Islam , Bednota, Prolitarii , Sharq-i-Iran, and Pravda . Other appendices contain details of Bolshevik Garrisons in the region.
