Appendix II.
Statement made by Nikolai Mazimofl, refugee from Russia, who arrived in
Meshed Herat.
i
<C I am a Russian officer and served with Generals Wrangel and Korniloff
and afterwards captured by the Bolsheviks who forced me to serve them.
I came to Turkistan via Petrovsk and Krasnovodsk and went straight to
Kushk at the end of 1921. At Kushk I was employed as officer in charge of
supplies at a frontier post about 20 versts from Kushkl While at this frontier
post I made friends with an Afghan frontier officer, a Colonel, and with his
assistance I was able to make my escape to Herat.
I met Maria Vinogradova at Herat, who had effected her escape from
Russia also. She had been employed as a nurse in one of the hospitals at
Kushk. We were married in Herat and after four months there, we were
allowed to proceed to Persia. On crossing the Persian frontier the police took
charge of us and we were brought into Meshed and have been kept in prison
since.”
In answer to questions Maximoff stated that he thought there were about
1,000 troops in Kushk in March 1922, but was not at all sure, as he had only
been in Kushk itself a few days, and then not inside the forts. Russian troops
were very dissatisfied, and it was a very difficult matter at any time to get
them to obey orders. He did not want to appeal' to the Russian Consul in
Meshed for assistance, as the Consul would send him back to Russia where he
would be shot. He would like to be given assistance to join General
Wrangel.
Note.— According to Police reports Maximoff and his alleged wife, Vinogradova are not
on good terms, the woman herself stating that she is not married to Maximo// 3 Maximoff at
one time tried to murder the woman, but was prevented by the prison officials.
Vinogradova is to be set free by the Persian Police, but efforts will be made to interview
her before 1 this happens, in order to ascertain whether there is any connection between her and
the Vinogradova mentioned in “ Who J s Who, Central Asia ”, No. 84]

About this item
- Content
The item consists of Part 1 of the subject file 1341/1921: 'Meshed Consular & Intelligence Diaries (1921-1922)'.
It contains numbered periodical (mainly weekly) reports relating to Persia [Iran], initially each called an 'Intelligence Summary' and later called a 'Meshed Intelligence Diary'. The reports cover the period of the week ending 1 January 1921 to the period ending 1 January 1923. They are initially issued by the British Military Mission, Meshed [Mashhad, also known as Mashad or Meshad], and later by the Military Attaché, Meshed. The intelligence summaries, and diaries, relate to political, foreign, military and diplomatic affairs in the locality and the neighbouring regions and are variously arranged under (chiefly) the following headings: 'Khorasan and North-East Persia'; 'Herat and Afghanistan'; 'Russian Turkistan'; 'Khorasan'; 'Cis-Frontier'; 'Trans-Frontier'; 'Afghanistan'; 'Bolshevik Garrisons'; 'Local'; 'Transcaspia'; 'Bokhara'; 'Tashkent'; 'Central Russia'; 'Khiva'; 'Ferghana'; 'General'; and 'Samarkand'. The summaries often include appendices which are usually extracts of local and national newspapers published in the regions and countries of interest, including Nabat , Rosta , Izvestia , Ittifaq-i-Islam , Bednota, Prolitarii , Sharq-i-Iran, and Pravda . Other appendices contain details of Bolshevik Garrisons in the region.
