12. Khatirchi, 4th September. —This town was entered by the rebels on the \
21 st August, but Russian reinforcements from Kaga drove them out again. There j
were many casualties on both sides. A | I
Samarkand.
13. The railway line between Samarkand and Tashkent was damaged by the
rebels several times during the week ending the 3rd September. The rebels have
increased in number in this area, and are continually attacking 'Katta Kurghan
Samarkand and the stations as far north as Jizak.
14. Katta Kurghan, 2nd September. —Rebels have made several attacks on
the town, but have been driven off each time. One hundred Russian cavalry
deserted to the rebels in the week preceding this report. Rebel forces are increas
ing in this and the Samarkand area, and are said to exceed 20,000.
Tashkent.
15. On the 23rd August the Russians arrested a number of important Muham
madans on the charge of having some sort of connection with the rebels. Persians
are being very badly treated in Tashkent, and they have not the wherewithal to
return to Persia.
Ferghana.
16. Khojent, 3rd September. — Rebels have again returned to the neighbour
hood of Khojent, and are very active. Their numbers are said to be increasing,
as able-bodied men choose this life in preference to conscription by the Russians.
17. House searches are made by the Russians, ostensibly to discover arms likely
to be given to the rebels, but at the same time all supplies found are commandeer
ed.
Central Russia.
18. Nijni Novgorod is reported to be in possession of rebel cossacks, and the
Bazaar a failure. ^

The summaries often include appendices which are usually extracts of local and national newspapers published in the regions and countries of interest, including Nabat , Rosta , Izvestia , Ittifaq-i-Islam , Bednota, Prolitarii , Sharq-i-Iran, and Pravda . Other appendices contain details of Bolshevik Garrisons in the region.
