and the one-tenth left for the cultivator. Military guards were on duty when the
harvest was being collected, and the grain sent in to the Supply Department at
Samarkand. When the cultivators objected, they were told that the Russian
authorities were responsible for the feeding of the people, and it was therefore
necessary to take the grain.
26. Russian troops (Communists) have driven the rebels from the vicinity of
Samarkand back 40 miles towards Shahr-i-Sabz. 6,000 troops were used in this
action, as the rebels were in many bands.
Feeghana.
27. Khokand, 28th June—The priests of Ferghana have proclaimed a Holy
War, and state that the followers of Islam in Ferghana are united with those of
Bokhara against the Communists. Fighting continues in all parts of Ferghana.

The summaries often include appendices which are usually extracts of local and national newspapers published in the regions and countries of interest, including Nabat , Rosta , Izvestia , Ittifaq-i-Islam , Bednota, Prolitarii , Sharq-i-Iran, and Pravda . Other appendices contain details of Bolshevik Garrisons in the region.
