14. Trains arrive daily with troops who are despatched at once to the front.
The rebels have advanced 35 miles from Baisun, and occupied the Bolshevik
trenches as Chashma Hazifan, a place about 18 miles from Guzar. The Bolsheviks
themselves estimate the number of rebels against them m his area at 12,000.
Fighting is continuous, and Bolshevik wounded are brought into Guzar daily f roni
the front.
15. The Shahr-i-Sabz rebells are active between Shahr-i-Sabz and Samarkand
and are now led by Ali Beg Effendi.
16. Shirabad has been occupied by the rebels and 200 Bolshevik and Young
Bokharan prisoners taken. Much ammunition was found in the town by tie
rebels.
17. Termez. June 3rd.—The rebel force between Kilif and Termez was
driven off on the 28th May, and the river route opened to Termez. Two ships
carrying troops and supplies got through to Termez. Troops in Termez are still
in their old clothes, as the river and road to Termez has been blocked by the rebels
for over two months. There are many desertions from the garrison troops to the
rebels. Supplies in the town are good as the Young Bokharans collected a large
amount during their reign there. The Young Bokharan officials have been re
placed by Bolsheviks, and Young Bokharan troops absorbed in Bolshevik units.
18. Fighting is going on north and east of Termez. The rebels are within six
miles of the town. Bolsheviks were driven from Shirabad with heavy losses.
Enver Pasha An Ottoman title used after the names of certain provincial governors, high-ranking officials and military commanders. was present when Shirabad was occupied, and the rebel commanders
were Suwaria Effendi and Osman Effendi. {Vide Diary No. 17, paragraph 29.)
19. Afghan subjects have left Termez for Afghanistan, and the frontier offi
cials do not visit each other. Afghan troops from Mazar-i-Sharif are arriving on
the frontier. The Bolshevik 2nd Frontier Cavalry Brigade patrols the river from
Airatin to Chushka Guzar.
20. The rebels appoint governors of towns which they occupy, and have put
into circulation their own paper money. Bolshevik currency is not accepted.
Bebel forces are drilled by Nikolai and Turkish officers, and are well equipped.
21. Mail from the Bolshevik Consul, Dodoff, at Mazar-i-Sharif, is received at
Termejz for onward transmission to Tashkent.
Tashkent.
22. A band of rebels has been formed between Chinaz and Tashkent, and are
plundering along the railway between these places. The leader is Beg Tash.
Ferghana.
23. June 2nd. —Beports from Khojent and Marghilan show that the Bolshevik
forces at Marghilan and Andijan have been considerably strengthened by reinforce
ments from Tashkent. Rebels are attacking continuously in three places, Mar
ghilan, between Andijan and Osh, and between Namangan and Shahkand.
24. The railway line from Khokand to Andijan and Namangan is frequently
damaged by the rebels, and the coal and kerosine mines between Khokand and
Marghilan are closed, owing to the damage caused by the rebels.
Central Russia.
25. Orenburg. May 27th. —Refugees are being evacuated north owing to
sickness and scarcity of food.
26. Orders were received from Tashkent that further recruits were not required
but that their names should be registered.
27. A rebel band of 3,000, including many Bolshekiv deserters, are operating
near Orenburg.
Afghanistan.
28. June 19th. — Arrivals from Sarakhs state that fighting occurred between
the Russians and Afghans at Kushk, on about the 10th instant. The Afghans
