Garrisons.
Note .—Owing to the frequent movement of troops, units are seldom located at one town
for any length of time, which makes the compilation of a battle order impossible at the present
time.
Aslchahad, May 21st.-2,500 Infantry. 1,000 Cavalry; mostly Muhammadans. Regiments
are the 5th Samara, Commander Nikolai Gareloff, and the 7th Kagan (from Tashkent) Com
mander Mohil Jan Ismatulla, a Tartar. 6 guns, 8 machine guns, 1 armoured car, 2 aeroplanes.
KushJc, May 14th.—2,500 Infantry, 1,000 Cavalry, mostly Muhammadans. 19 guns, 12
machine guns, 2 armoured cars, 3 aeroplanes. Troops belong to Communist regiments, Com
mander, Melinkoff.
Charjui, May 21st.-4,000 Infantry, 750 Cavalry, 800 Marines of No. 1 Oxus Flotilla
Regiments are the 3rd Orenburg and 4th Turkestan, both of the 1st Red Division. 1,000 of the
troops are guarding the Charjui Bridge. 12 guns, 11 machine guns, 1 armoured car, 2 aeroplanes.
Karshi May 18th.—1,150 Infantry, 750 Cavalry, mostly Muhammadans. 250 troops arrive
daily from Kagan and proceed to the front through Guzar. 9 guns, 6 machine guns, 1 armoure
car, 2 aeroplanes.
Kermineh May M.—1,400 Infantry, 600 Cavalry. Communist troops of the 2nd
Tashkent Regiment! Commander, Alexander Makarofi. 3 guns, 3 machine guns, 1 armoured

Kalta Kurghan, May ISf&.-UOO Infantry, 400 Cavalry; mostly Russians. 3 guns,

The intelligence summaries, and diaries, relate to political, foreign, military and diplomatic affairs in the locality and the neighbouring regions and are variously arranged under (chiefly) the following headings: 'Khorasan and North-East Persia'; 'Herat and Afghanistan'; 'Russian Turkistan'; 'Khorasan'; 'Cis-Frontier'; 'Trans-Frontier'; 'Afghanistan'; 'Bolshevik Garrisons'; 'Local'; 'Transcaspia'; 'Bokhara'; 'Tashkent'; 'Central Russia'; 'Khiva'; 'Ferghana'; 'General'; and 'Samarkand'. The summaries often include appendices which are usually extracts of local and national newspapers published in the regions and countries of interest, including Nabat , Rosta , Izvestia , Ittifaq-i-Islam , Bednota, Prolitarii , Sharq-i-Iran, and Pravda . Other appendices contain details of Bolshevik Garrisons in the region.
