retreating to the forts. Bolsheviks had 100 casualties and the attackers 20 killed
and some wounded. Junaid Khan’s men captured 50 rifles and carried off consi
derable property.
Samara.
29. April 6th. —Food conditions very bad. All animals have been killed for
food, and dead bodies of humans are eaten by the refugees, who number 30,000.
All serais, shops and houses are filled with refugees. Americans are giving food
and clothes to the children.
30. The railway workers were on strike from the 1st to the 6th April, demand
ing food and clothes. They were supplied from Tashkent, and were told that all
would be well as the Russian Representatives at the Conference had made a suit
able agreement with all the Powers.
1 31. The Bolsheviks curse the French in their bulletins, and say that France
is the enemy of the workmen. They used to abuse the British, but do not do so
now.
32. Trains run through from Moscow to Taskhent daily.
33. One thousand troops left for Siberia on the 4th April.

34. Reference Diary No. 9, page 4. The Turkoman mentioned was again
sent for by the Afghan Consul General to ascertain whether a reply had been
received from Oraz Sardar Leader of a tribe or a polity; also refers to a military rank or title given to a commander of an army or division. . During the conversation the Consul General told the
Turkoman that the Afghans were.secretly helping the rebels with men and rifles.

convenient for him to come to Meshed, the Consul General would be prepared to

35. Two members of the Russian Boundary Commission which is in Meshed
made a very gloomy picture of the conditions prevailing in Turkestan, which they
say is due to the shortage of food, and the trouble given to the Bolsheviks by the
rebels. The Russian members of the Commission are as follows :—-
