17. (Reference Diary No. 9, Bokhara.) The 4th Samara Regiment fr 0!11
Kagan for Khiva reported as being still at Charjui on the 9th April.
18. One thousand Young Bokharan troops are stationed at Old Charjui.
19. Troops from Merv and Samarkand are sent by river to Khiva. Detach
ments had also been sent by river for Kirki and Rata Kesar, but rebels attacked
the boats and forced them to return to Charjui.
20. Turkomans are fleeing to Khiva and south to Afghanistan to avoid enlist-
ment. All their sheep and carpets are purchased from them by the agents of the
Vneshtorg and the Centro-Soyuz. *
Bokhara.
21. April 14th. —The railway line to Karshi, damaged by the rebels in the latter
part of March, has not yet been repaired. Rebels attacked and sacked the villages
of Ismail Khawa (four miles from Bokhara) and Bahaud Din (12 miles fiom
Bokhara), killing the Bolsheviks.
22. A Turkoman arrival from Bokhara, who left that place on the 15th April,
states that many Afghans are helping the rebels at Kulab, north of the Ab-i-Panja
river. He also states that the Young Bokharan Government is assisting the
rebels with stores.
Samarkand.
23. April 14th. —Heavy casualties have been inflicted on the Bolshevikshy the
rebels, who from the cover of the hills caught the Bolsheviks advancing across the
plains. Fighting still continues and many deserters are joining the rebels.

The intelligence summaries, and diaries, relate to political, foreign, military and diplomatic affairs in the locality and the neighbouring regions and are variously arranged under (chiefly) the following headings: 'Khorasan and North-East Persia'; 'Herat and Afghanistan'; 'Russian Turkistan'; 'Khorasan'; 'Cis-Frontier'; 'Trans-Frontier'; 'Afghanistan'; 'Bolshevik Garrisons'; 'Local'; 'Transcaspia'; 'Bokhara'; 'Tashkent'; 'Central Russia'; 'Khiva'; 'Ferghana'; 'General'; and 'Samarkand'. The summaries often include appendices which are usually extracts of local and national newspapers published in the regions and countries of interest, including Nabat , Rosta , Izvestia , Ittifaq-i-Islam , Bednota, Prolitarii , Sharq-i-Iran, and Pravda . Other appendices contain details of Bolshevik Garrisons in the region.
