Intelligence Summary No. 6 lor the period ending 28th February 1922.
Transcaspia.
1. A ship-load of rice and fish reached Krasnovodsk from Enzeli on 10th Feb
ruary. The consignment was under despatch to Tashkent.
Three ship-loads of kerosine oil for Gomesh Tappa (Persia) were in the port.
It was rumoured that their sailing was prohibited. Camels were being forcibly
collected from the Kirghiz for Tashkent.
2. Early in February the garrison at Kizil Arvat was replaced by 350 troops
from Askabad. The old garrison with one armoured motor and 2 motor lorries
was despatched to Krasnovodsk en route to Baku. 350 more troops passed
through Kizil Arvat for Krasnovodsk a day or two later..
3. The Commandant at Kara Kala outpost has been recalled to Askabad,
partly on account of numerous desertions from his command. There is much
smuggling at Kara Kala with the Persian Turkomans, arms and ammunition being
exchanged for grain and sheep. The grain is sent by motor to Kizil Arvat. From
this place many Persian, Caucasian and Turkoman propagandists of Bolshevism
are being sent into the Persian Yomut country.
4. The Persian Consul left Askabad for Tashkent on 14th February, leaving
Agha Shaikh to act as Consular Agent.
5. 'Agha Mahomed Aliov, late Dragoman to the Russian Consul General in
Meshed, is under arrest at Askabad.
6. Three days’ quarantine for Typhus is enforced at Askabad, All travellers
are inoculated with anti-Typhus serum.
7. Ab-i-Hayat Khanum, wife of Khan.Sir Beg Caucasian, still presides over the
Women’s Committee.
Khiva.
8. Many Yomut ex-rebels have been enlisted in the Khiva regimerits. Some
brigands are again out near Yilanli and Badard Gul.
Trade is stagnant in spite of the advertised liberty. Only snuff is said to be in
the market for sale.
Mery.
9. 50 Cavalry and 100 Infantry were despatched on 14th February towards
Sarakhs.
Wheat from Sarakhs commenced to reach Merv early in February. Recruiting
for the forces in Samarkand ce&se&on or about 14th February.
A train runs to Kushk once a week.
Bokhara.
10. Columns from Shahr-i-Sabz and Turmez have driven the Basmachis out
of Baisun (on 1st February); and D'eh Nan towards Hisar. Fighting occurred at
Urchi.
The railway from Kerki to Turmez is being repaired.
The Bokharan Military Commander, Hasan Effendi, Ottoman Turk, with his
Staff was at Karshi on 1st February. He proceeded thence to Shahr-i-Sabz.
Sharaf Takhas Bai is said to have joined the Basmachis at the end of January
with 150 Sowars.
A train going from Kagan to Karshi on February 5th was derailed. 14 persons

The intelligence summaries, and diaries, relate to political, foreign, military and diplomatic affairs in the locality and the neighbouring regions and are variously arranged under (chiefly) the following headings: 'Khorasan and North-East Persia'; 'Herat and Afghanistan'; 'Russian Turkistan'; 'Khorasan'; 'Cis-Frontier'; 'Trans-Frontier'; 'Afghanistan'; 'Bolshevik Garrisons'; 'Local'; 'Transcaspia'; 'Bokhara'; 'Tashkent'; 'Central Russia'; 'Khiva'; 'Ferghana'; 'General'; and 'Samarkand'. The summaries often include appendices which are usually extracts of local and national newspapers published in the regions and countries of interest, including Nabat , Rosta , Izvestia , Ittifaq-i-Islam , Bednota, Prolitarii , Sharq-i-Iran, and Pravda . Other appendices contain details of Bolshevik Garrisons in the region.
