11. The Bokharan subjects in Meshed have recognized the Bolshevik
Consul-General as their representative and have applied to him for assistance in
their affairs.
12. He received during the week a draft from Tehran for 8,000 tomans 10,000 Persian dinars, or a gold coin of that value. .
13. It has been reported that a Tatar of the name of Hissam-ud-din is
going to Herat from Meshed in the capacity of Bolshevik Consul-General
there. Official circles in Meshed have never heard of the man. The reason for
the move—if true—is that a Muslim is more able to get into the confidence of
a Muslim community than can a pure Russian.
14. Genei'al .—The notorious editor of the “ Bahar ”, during the career of
Muhammad Taqi Khan as Governor-General, Khorasan, and the period of
office of his successor, Mahmud Khan Nauzari, was sentenced to be banished
from Meshed. He has not yet complied with his sentence but hopes that by
doing a little circular tour via Quchan, Sabzewar, and back to Meshed, to fulfil
the letter, if not the spirit of his penalty.
It may be remembered that at the time referred to his paper printed the
most scurrilous anti-British matter. It is noticed in No. 81, paragraph 843
of the Quetta Bureau Intelligence Summary that one at least of these effusions
has reached Kandahar.
15. The road guards of Nasrat Lashkar (Meshed-Tehran road) are reported
to be committing on excesses villagers. The Armenian contingent which mar
ched from Meshecfa fortnight ago to Tehran is accused in similar terms.
16. Registration of all foreign subjects is being carried out by the Chief
of Police, Meshed.
17. Arrivals from Iraq now report tranquillity there and testify to the
excellent work of British troops in that country.
The 51 Indians referred to in last week’s Summary have arrived in
Meshed.. They had taken advantage of the Soviet Government’s offer of
repatriation of all foreign nationals. In this category they say, Indians stood
last. A list of their caste-fellows (Sindhis) killed by Basmachis, etc., will he

About this item

Content

The item consists of Part 1 of the subject file 1341/1921: 'Meshed Consular & Intelligence Diaries (1921-1922)'.

It contains numbered periodical (mainly weekly) reports relating to Persia [Iran], initially each called an 'Intelligence Summary' and later called a 'Meshed Intelligence Diary'. The reports cover the period of the week ending 1 January 1921 to the period ending 1 January 1923. They are initially issued by the British Military Mission, Meshed [Mashhad, also known as Mashad or Meshad], and later by the Military Attaché, Meshed. The intelligence summaries, and diaries, relate to political, foreign, military and diplomatic affairs in the locality and the neighbouring regions and are variously arranged under (chiefly) the following headings: 'Khorasan and North-East Persia'; 'Herat and Afghanistan'; 'Russian Turkistan'; 'Khorasan'; 'Cis-Frontier'; 'Trans-Frontier'; 'Afghanistan'; 'Bolshevik Garrisons'; 'Local'; 'Transcaspia'; 'Bokhara'; 'Tashkent'; 'Central Russia'; 'Khiva'; 'Ferghana'; 'General'; and 'Samarkand'. The summaries often include appendices which are usually extracts of local and national newspapers published in the regions and countries of interest, including Nabat , Rosta , Izvestia , Ittifaq-i-Islam , Bednota, Prolitarii , Sharq-i-Iran, and Pravda . Other appendices contain details of Bolshevik Garrisons in the region.
