BOLSHEVIK GABBISONS.
Askhabad. —22nd December 1921.
Two pure Bussian units are reported and two Muslim the 1st Sar Darya
Mussalman Begiment, a unit not heard of before and the Turkmen Cavalry
of four squadrons at Kaushi under Qurban Quli Niazov. Further details are
expected. (By man from Turkmen Cavalry.) There is again talk of removal
of headquarters of 1st Division from Samarkand to Askhabad.
Merv. —20th December 1921.
About 350. Unit: 8th Samara.
Kushk .—
According to general numbers quoted by casuals the strength of the
garrison appears lately to have increased. Details are awaited before a posi
tive statement is made.
JP' Alexandrovsk. —8th December 1921.
Two thousand, including 600 mounted, nine guns, two armoured cars, one
lorry, two aeroplanes, 40 transport carts.
Karki. —13th December 1921.
Nine hundred, majority Muslims and' including 250 Cavalry. Of this
total 75 horse and 25 foot are at Bosaqa s 30 horse and 20 foot at Kizil Ayaq,
and 10 horse and 35 foot at Karkicha and Imam Jaffa Teppe.' Units: 4th New
Bokhara and a detachment of 11th Samara, six guns, one lorry, 15 carts, one
projector on I. J. Teppe.
Guzar. —13th December 1921.
Six hundred and fifty, majority Muslims and including;250 of 5th Yash
Bokharans (100 cavalry and 150 foot). The remainder are Bolshevik troops
of whom 50 are mounted. Two guns, one lorry. Wireless.
Khojant. —13th December 1921.
Five hundred and fifty, mostly Mussalmans including 50 cavalry. Unit:
3rd Orenburg plus 40 militia of whom 10 are mounted, three guns, two
machine guns, one armoured car, one lorry, eight carts. Wireless. A projector
on a wagon. (By man discharged from 3rd Orenburg.)
Margilan. —13th December 1921.
One thousand five hundred, majority Muslims including 450 cavalry..
Units: 4th Ferghana, 17th Orenburg, 6th Semiriechia Cossack Cavalry, six
guns, one armoured car. four lorries. A projector on a railway wagon. The
town is 12 versts from the main line station but there is a feeder line to the
town. One aeroplane, 10 transport carts.
Namenghan. —Tlth December 1921.
One thousand eight hundred, majority Muslims and including 300 cavalry.
Units: 2nd Trotski, 4th Samara, 12th Chernyaevo, six guns, nine machine
guns (each unit having two guns and three machine guns), six lorries, 10 carts,
Wireless. A projector. (By a man from the 12th Chernyaevo.)
Chernyevo. —12th December 1921.
Three hundred, mostly Muslims and including 50 mounted. Unit:
detachment 8th Samara, two guns, two machine guns, wireless, one armoured
car, two aeroplanes, one on flight to Tashkent and one to Khojant. (By man
from local police.)
Tashkent .—6th December 1921.
Four thousand five hundred, majority Muslims, including 4C0 cavalry.
Units: 5th Kazan, 3rd Tashkent, 6th Bussian. Detail different from that
given in I. S. 52 but witness was in Supply and Clothing Dep6t, Tashkent.

The intelligence summaries, and diaries, relate to political, foreign, military and diplomatic affairs in the locality and the neighbouring regions and are variously arranged under (chiefly) the following headings: 'Khorasan and North-East Persia'; 'Herat and Afghanistan'; 'Russian Turkistan'; 'Khorasan'; 'Cis-Frontier'; 'Trans-Frontier'; 'Afghanistan'; 'Bolshevik Garrisons'; 'Local'; 'Transcaspia'; 'Bokhara'; 'Tashkent'; 'Central Russia'; 'Khiva'; 'Ferghana'; 'General'; and 'Samarkand'. The summaries often include appendices which are usually extracts of local and national newspapers published in the regions and countries of interest, including Nabat , Rosta , Izvestia , Ittifaq-i-Islam , Bednota, Prolitarii , Sharq-i-Iran, and Pravda . Other appendices contain details of Bolshevik Garrisons in the region.
