Appendix I.
BOLSHEVIK GAERISONS.
Krasnovodsk to Charjui. —No change recorded.
Ankhabad Frontier Zone. —Slight increase in garrisons of posts owing to
a raid by Kurd robbers.
Kushk Fortress. —No change recorded.
Kushk Subsidiary Posts —Morqala, 10 ; Salim Cbasbmai, 25; Kushk Post,
50 ; Karacbob, 30 ; Brogblij, 20.
Khiva. —4th November 1921.
One thousand and five hundred in Khiva itself and subsidiary garrisons,
majority Muslims and including about 4oO mounted. Units which are self-
contained as regards cavalry, guns and machine guns : 11th Kazan, 13th Turkes
tan, 16th Chimkent. Garrison subsequently augmented by 600 troops from
Charjui and 400 from Petroalexandrovsk, including artillery and mounted
elements. Tw r o armoured cars, 2 lorries, 3 aeroplanes. Garrisons of six posts
between Petroalexandrovsk vary from 25 to 40 men.
Karki. —9th November 1821.
Two thousand and five hundred, majority Muslims, including 500
cavalry. '
Termez. —11th November 1921.
No change recorded but an unconfirmed report states the garrison in
Termez itself does not now stand at more than 1,000.
Sarai Karnar. —10th November 1921.
Two hundred and fifty including 1 squadron. In addition 150 Bokharan
troops of whom 50 are mounted. One gun 3 machine guns. Projector.
Wireless. Commander, Lamakin. Bokharan Governor, Mirza Abdul Ghani.
(Evidence by follower of Amu Darya Cavalry Brigade lately serving in
Sarai Kamar.)
Kagan. —15th November 1921.
One thousand and six hundred, majority Muslims, including 300 cavalry.
Units not identified.
Samarqand. —21st November 1921.
Eight hundred majority Muslims and including 1 squadron and 50
mounted police. Pour hundred of the above are in the Port, 200 in barracks,
and 50 at the railway station. Staff, 1st Turkestan Rifle Division numbering
about 100 all ranks ard vocations. Command area, Krasnovodsk to Samar
qand and including Kushk. Unit : 9th Chernyaevski composed of 3 com
panies, 1 squadron, 1 machine gun company and artillery.
Khojent. —12th November 1921.
Seven hundred and fifty, majority Russians and including 1 squadron.
Two guns. Wireless. One aeroplane for mail.

The summaries often include appendices which are usually extracts of local and national newspapers published in the regions and countries of interest, including Nabat , Rosta , Izvestia , Ittifaq-i-Islam , Bednota, Prolitarii , Sharq-i-Iran, and Pravda . Other appendices contain details of Bolshevik Garrisons in the region.
