Representatives of powerful American trading concerns are offering; th®
Rar Eastern Republic large loans and are announcing their wish to enter into*
every kind of agreement. This is in connection with a late decree of the Ear
Eastern Republic which relates to free trade in raw materials and the free
circulation of gold.
Revoltjtionaky movement in Japan.
There is a considerable upheaval among the working classes of Japan and
labourers at the port of Yokohama have lately gone on strike. The strike is
accompanied by demonstrations in the streets, by the scattering of proclama
tions, and the singing of revolutionary songs.
News from everywhere.
Vienna. —20th September.
The “ Arbeiter Zeitung ” comments on the bankruptcy of the bourgeois
economic policy of .Austria. The watchwords of the bourgeoisie are : Free
trade, the abolition of restricted credits in trade, and the abolition of taxes
on property. All this will produce an unprecedented crisis in the cost of
living.
Petrograd. —8th October. In view of the agreement to exchange priso
ners of war, Hungary is despatching to Russia 400 liberated Communists.
The first Military co-operative session.
The 1st Plenipotentiary Military Consumers’ Society of the Turkestan
front will be inaugurated at Tashkent on the 15th of this month. During the
summer of the present year there has been a persistent tendency among units
and administrations towards the formation of a common co-operative
scheme.
The first of its kind, the session will enjoy principally an administrative
significance. It is about to illuminate a series of primary questions relating
to military co-operation (economic) which have, so far not been adjudicated
upon by present legislators.
Among the agenda first for discussion will be 'found the question of the
formation of a military co-operative bank for the Turkfront.
On Winter.
As the cold weather approaches all begin to weep and cry “ What shall
we do this winter ? We shall freeze for there is neither wood nor coal ”. The
summer has gone, no one thought of wood and now we shall clamour like a
lot of dogs let slip in the chase—text mutilated—we should send a detachment
of workers to procure wood wherever possible. We have abundance of fuel and
it is only necessary to convey it to the railway. This has not been done so far
as there are no means therefor, yet where there is a will there is a way. There
is money too but no one will afford the necessary credit.
Not far from the town of Aula Ata there is “ saksaul ” (probably some
form of forest growth. Trans.) covering an area of 80 to 90 versts and to an
amount of 10,000,000 poods. Come and get it! Why not gather the brushwood
growing there ? There is sufficient fuel for the whole of Turkestan. They
tell me who am a workman, that there are no rails, sleepers, trenails, or chairs
but that is not true.
Means are to hand. You will have to wrangle with the peasants who
have camels, and about pack transport something will appear in due course in
the newspapers. The peasants are willing to meet us on suitable terms.
