the Bolsheviks, though this is not clear. The Governor asked for their
release but was told by Kurliant that the matter was no longer in his hands,
Jamshedis and Baluchis, Bussian subjects, are reported to have driven
sheep from Zorabad to Russian territory. The Governor of Zorabad is
alleged by Kurliant to have sent 40 horsemen into Bolshevik territory who
looted three flocks and returned with them to Persia. The latter threatens '
to complain of Persian officials to Tashkent.
The Governor of Zorabad has not disbanded his 40 horsemen and is
keeping them on the frontier at a place called Garmab. He intends to
launch them on another raid to bring in another flock of sheep so as equate
the loss caused him by the Jamshedis and Baluchis.
To counter this the Bolsheviks have sent an armed party of 50 men to
Pul-i-Khatun and a collision between them and the Governor’s men is not
unlikely.
255. TRANS-FRONTIER,
Military.—The statement contained in last week’s Summary relative
to the proiect of transferring the 11th Army to Askhabad from Baku, also
the staff of the 1st Army from Turkestan, is now amplified and modified
by the same informant who writes that the normal provision of supnlies in
Askhabad is commensurate with rationing 5,000 combatants but that the
Bolsheviks have now to contemplate provision for 30,000 combatants if and
when this scheme matures, which is dictated by Askhabad’s proximitv to
Persian Wheat.
The reference to the staff of the 1st Army should read as the staff of
the 1st Division, the correspondent’s error being due to the fact that former
ly the 1st Army headquarters were in Askhabad, This formation was dis
solved last year and from its elements the 1st Turkestan Rifle Division was
formed, the headquarters being subsequently transferred to Samarqand.
The appellation of 1st Army has persisted in the minds of the militarilv
inexact. J
The statement contained in Intelligence Summary 43, page 9 et sea
