^xiv) Shuja-ul-Mulk and Saiad Haidar Barbari arrived in a carriage with
an escort on the 23rd and went to see the Naib-nl-Hukumeh. They were i
lodged in the Chahar Bagh.
(ccv) The families of these two chiefs are lodged in the sarai at Kafir
Qalaand none is allowed to go near them, a guard being posted to
enforce the order. These people appear to be very unhappy. (They have
been looted of everything by the Meshed gendarmes.)
(xvi) On the 17th a jamadar and three pahra of horsemen were sent to
Kafir Qala to remain at the disposal of Colonel Muhammad Shuaib Khan. An
officer and four men arrived on the same day from Kabul.
(xvii) On the 22nd the Ghaznachi Battalion under its own Colonel and
accompanied by a troop of cavalry left for Kafir Qala. Their transport included
20 camel loads of ammunition, 32 of tents, and 5 camels with kajawas
for sick men. Each man had 30 rounds S. A. A. The Naib Salar told the
Colonel of the regiment to post double sentries on the road to Kafir Qala for
communication with Herat.
{xviii) On the 23rd an engineer, 12 masons, 20 bricklayers, and 100
sappers left for Chahildukhteran to build blockhouses on the frontier and to
repair existing barracks.
(xix) It is reported that a letter from Kabul informs the Naib-ul-
Hukumeh that the Commander-in-Chief, General Nadir Khan, has been
arrested and that his assistant, Hasham Khan, has fled.
{xx) Eight Indians arrived under escort from Chahildukhteran on the
17th. They are housed in the Chahar Bagh under arrest and though
allowed into the bazar for purchases they are accompanied and are not allowed
converse with anybody for fear they should communicate Bolshevik political
tenets.
(xxi) When Muhammad Hasham Khan was Naib Salar of Herat he
promoted to captain’s rank twenty sepoys Term used in English to refer to an Indian infantryman. Carries some derogatory connotations as sometimes used as a means of othering and emphasising race, colour, origins, or rank. whom he had brought with him
from Kabul. They have all been dismissed from the service under orders
from Kabul.
