Herat .—September 29th to October 6th.
Colonel Abdul Hamid Khan who was in charge of Jamal Pasha’s sump
tuary arrangements has accompanied him to Russia while three Ottoman
Turks who were with him as orderlies have returned to Herat. They will
join Reza Beg in Kabul.
(ii) The Bolshevik Consulate Secretary who now calls himself Consul has
given offence to the Naib-ul-Hukumeh by not attending on a day set aside
by the latter for an interview. He kept the latter waiting on the appointed
day and did not turn up till the day following.
(m) Over eight lakhs One lakh is equal to one hundred thousand rupees of rupees Indian silver coin also widely used in the Persian Gulf. have been sent from the Herat Treasury to
Kabul.
(iv) Some correspondence is going on between Yulin, an officer in Kushk,
and Colonel Abdul Rahim Khan, Officer Commanding Chahildukhteran, on the
subject of a return of Bolshevik stolen property lifted by raiders and conveyed
to Afghanistan. Two Bolshevik soldiers with rifles strayed across the frontier
and have not been heard of since. Their return is asked for.
(«?) The Naib Salar has purchased 4,000 water bottles from a Kandahar
merchant. He has employed tailors to make drill covers and newar slings
for the same. These will be kept in store and issued when required. Swords
and scabbards for the newly enlisted cavalrymen have been ordered.
{vi) The Naib Salar sent for all the artillery horses from Ghorian, Oba*
and Shaftan as he wished to inspect them. He has arranged them according
to colour.
{vii) Shuja-ul-Mulk Hazara with his sons and Saiad Haidar Barbari
with his horsemen are still in Afghanistan awaiting a reply to their petition
to Kabul. The former presented the Naib-ul-Hukumeh with thirty mares
and several carpets and asked for a State loan of 10,000 rupees Indian silver coin also widely used in the Persian Gulf. which was
refused without authority from Kabul sanctioning it.
{viii) Thirty-five Jamshedi families have sought permission to return to
Afghanistan. The Naib-ul-Hukumeh has sanctioned the move and gave the
deputation of six elders a khilaat apiece.

The intelligence summaries, and diaries, relate to political, foreign, military and diplomatic affairs in the locality and the neighbouring regions and are variously arranged under (chiefly) the following headings: 'Khorasan and North-East Persia'; 'Herat and Afghanistan'; 'Russian Turkistan'; 'Khorasan'; 'Cis-Frontier'; 'Trans-Frontier'; 'Afghanistan'; 'Bolshevik Garrisons'; 'Local'; 'Transcaspia'; 'Bokhara'; 'Tashkent'; 'Central Russia'; 'Khiva'; 'Ferghana'; 'General'; and 'Samarkand'. The summaries often include appendices which are usually extracts of local and national newspapers published in the regions and countries of interest, including Nabat , Rosta , Izvestia , Ittifaq-i-Islam , Bednota, Prolitarii , Sharq-i-Iran, and Pravda . Other appendices contain details of Bolshevik Garrisons in the region.
