Herat. August 26th to September 2nd — (i). The Bolshevik Consul returned
to Herat on 26th August and applied to the Naib-ul-Hukumeh for an interview
which was held in secret. It transpired later that the Consul told the Naib-ul-
Hukumeh that his health is failing and that he had received a month’s leave from
Tashkent while at Khushk. His secretary will officiate during his absence. He
asked to be provided with a “ takht-i-rawan ” or palanquin for the journey to
Kushk. He left with four pony loads of baggage and his Russian clerk on the
29th.
(ii) Before his departure the Bolshevik Consul asked the Naib-ul-Hukumeh
to remove Colonel Abdul Rahim Khan from Chahildukhteran, making that officer’s
ill-health a pretext. The Naib-ul-Hukumeh refused and, instead, promised to
send a hakim to treat the officer. The Naib-ul-Hukumeh has observed thet the
Bolsheviks have tried to win over Colonel Abdul Rahim to their side but, being
unsuccessful, now wish to have him removed.
(Hi) A letter was received on the 30th August from Suritz’ servant who wrote
from Kabul. He stated therein that he was leaving Kabul with his master after
the, Id Qurban (11th August). They would travel via Hazarajat to Herat.
i (iv) It is reported that the Bolshevik Consul-designate for Kandahar, who, it
may be remembered left for Kushk for medical treatment for his wife, will not return
and that someone else will take his place.

About this item
- Content
The item consists of Part 1 of the subject file 1341/1921: 'Meshed Consular & Intelligence Diaries (1921-1922)'.
It contains numbered periodical (mainly weekly) reports relating to Persia [Iran], initially each called an 'Intelligence Summary' and later called a 'Meshed Intelligence Diary'. The reports cover the period of the week ending 1 January 1921 to the period ending 1 January 1923. They are initially issued by the British Military Mission, Meshed [Mashhad, also known as Mashad or Meshad], and later by the Military Attaché, Meshed. The intelligence summaries, and diaries, relate to political, foreign, military and diplomatic affairs in the locality and the neighbouring regions and are variously arranged under (chiefly) the following headings: 'Khorasan and North-East Persia'; 'Herat and Afghanistan'; 'Russian Turkistan'; 'Khorasan'; 'Cis-Frontier'; 'Trans-Frontier'; 'Afghanistan'; 'Bolshevik Garrisons'; 'Local'; 'Transcaspia'; 'Bokhara'; 'Tashkent'; 'Central Russia'; 'Khiva'; 'Ferghana'; 'General'; and 'Samarkand'. The summaries often include appendices which are usually extracts of local and national newspapers published in the regions and countries of interest, including Nabat , Rosta , Izvestia , Ittifaq-i-Islam , Bednota, Prolitarii , Sharq-i-Iran, and Pravda . Other appendices contain details of Bolshevik Garrisons in the region.
