But the French Republican Government worked up to white heat and hating the workman
peasant while tenderly amorous of Imperial Russia, if you please was not at pains to conceal its
desires. Thus the French Bourse hoping to get back its milliards has gambled quite an unneces
sary number of times in Russian paper.
The more prudent and well schooled English Government, warily insuring itself in the event
of loss by means of two or three side bets and always playing with two policies, with a sweepin
aristocratic gesture of the left hand permits its tender lady patronesses to organize charity bazar
while with the other hand it submits to us the following demand : A foreign country, deeply
affected by the tortures of the ungry is ready to help on condifon that that help should
directly to the peasantry and to be uncontrolled and not interfered with by Soviet organiza
tions.
The pian in the street will think—What could be better for the Soviet Government than
tlmt these people should do the work themselves ? But the Moscow Government, well-versed in
English Perfidy, is not of that opinion. The wily Lloyd George is setting a trap for us.
If we give our consent to a direct and uncontrolled connection of a whiteguard foreion
country with the districts on the Volga it means we acquiesce in our own destruction, it would
mean we must allow within our midst the existence of whiteguard committees, it would mean
the sanction to organize a monstrous fresh revolution under the banners of the Red (Toss
If, on the other hand, we assure tender hearted London of our profound respect and
farsightedly, ref use her help we shall—according to the foreign whiteguards—provoke the starvino'
masses to revolution. 0
Is not that well thought out ?
We expect nothing, either from the burgeoisie or from the So-called democratic gover ,ments
In spite of this new perfidy, in spite of these new conspiracies, in spite of the hundreds of
spies, instructors, and couriers of Savinkov, in spite of his sappers for the destruction of
bridges and factories, in spite of kilogrammes of strong venom for poisoning detachments of the
Red Army —we want nothing.
Hearing the ones of the little children dying of hunger, seeing the tears of their mothers
listening to the groans of the aged, the Russian and foreign bourgeoisie offer us one gift one
form of help—A stone for bread.
That is our portion. Let us eat of it and get well.
, , 0llIy ; our Proletarian brotherhood of the poor will bring us their last piece of weevilly
bread and say Here is our share. Eat it and get well. ” 1 ^

About this item
- Content
The item consists of Part 1 of the subject file 1341/1921: 'Meshed Consular & Intelligence Diaries (1921-1922)'.
It contains numbered periodical (mainly weekly) reports relating to Persia [Iran], initially each called an 'Intelligence Summary' and later called a 'Meshed Intelligence Diary'. The reports cover the period of the week ending 1 January 1921 to the period ending 1 January 1923. They are initially issued by the British Military Mission, Meshed [Mashhad, also known as Mashad or Meshad], and later by the Military Attaché, Meshed. The intelligence summaries, and diaries, relate to political, foreign, military and diplomatic affairs in the locality and the neighbouring regions and are variously arranged under (chiefly) the following headings: 'Khorasan and North-East Persia'; 'Herat and Afghanistan'; 'Russian Turkistan'; 'Khorasan'; 'Cis-Frontier'; 'Trans-Frontier'; 'Afghanistan'; 'Bolshevik Garrisons'; 'Local'; 'Transcaspia'; 'Bokhara'; 'Tashkent'; 'Central Russia'; 'Khiva'; 'Ferghana'; 'General'; and 'Samarkand'. The summaries often include appendices which are usually extracts of local and national newspapers published in the regions and countries of interest, including Nabat , Rosta , Izvestia , Ittifaq-i-Islam , Bednota, Prolitarii , Sharq-i-Iran, and Pravda . Other appendices contain details of Bolshevik Garrisons in the region.
