Each battery consists of nominally 162 men under 1 Captain and 6 Jemadars but is short of
20 to 25 men. In addition there are 8 muzzle loading guns mounted on the city walls and at the
gates. Each gun has one sepoy Term used in English to refer to an Indian infantryman. Carries some derogatory connotations as sometimes used as a means of othering and emphasising race, colour, origins, or rank. attendant and the whole are under a Captain.

Three companies of Sappers and Miners, each company nominally 100 strong under a
Captain and a Subedar. Each company is short of 20 to 30 men.
Equipment.
Five years ago 1,^00 magazine rifles of German pattern were brought from Kabul to Herat
and issued to the Khaki and Ghazanchi Battalions. All regiments in Herat are now equipped
with magazine rifles with bayonet. The Charyari and Turk Sowar In the East India Company army and later Indian Army, an ordinary native cavalryman or mounted cavalryman. Cavalry regiments have
given in their short Kabul magazine rifles, and have been issued with breech loading rifles from
the Ghazanchi Regiment.

Khaki drill worn only on parade—off parade any mufti plus a belt to distinguish the indivi
dual from a civilian.

The item consists of Part 1 of the subject file 1341/1921: 'Meshed Consular & Intelligence Diaries (1921-1922)'.

It contains numbered periodical (mainly weekly) reports relating to Persia [Iran], initially each called an 'Intelligence Summary' and later called a 'Meshed Intelligence Diary'. The reports cover the period of the week ending 1 January 1921 to the period ending 1 January 1923. They are initially issued by the British Military Mission, Meshed [Mashhad, also known as Mashad or Meshad], and later by the Military Attaché, Meshed. The intelligence summaries, and diaries, relate to political, foreign, military and diplomatic affairs in the locality and the neighbouring regions and are variously arranged under (chiefly) the following headings: 'Khorasan and North-East Persia'; 'Herat and Afghanistan'; 'Russian Turkistan'; 'Khorasan'; 'Cis-Frontier'; 'Trans-Frontier'; 'Afghanistan'; 'Bolshevik Garrisons'; 'Local'; 'Transcaspia'; 'Bokhara'; 'Tashkent'; 'Central Russia'; 'Khiva'; 'Ferghana'; 'General'; and 'Samarkand'. The summaries often include appendices which are usually extracts of local and national newspapers published in the regions and countries of interest, including Nabat , Rosta , Izvestia , Ittifaq-i-Islam , Bednota, Prolitarii , Sharq-i-Iran, and Pravda . Other appendices contain details of Bolshevik Garrisons in the region.
