The authorities are conducting a minute house-to-house search for go 7 d and
silver articles and coins .which they seize if found.
(Arrivals from Russia talk of the Bolsheviks’ intention to issue a metallic
currency next year and these house-to-house requisitions may be a part of that
scheme. It is highly unlikely though that there will be any currency in Russia
for domestic use for very many years for, supposing the Bolsheviks survive much
longer, they will require all the gold and silver bullion they can mine or find to sup
port their credits abroad.
( The civil administration of Bokhara is in the hands of natives but the Bol
sheviks retain military control as they do also of the Amu Darya.
Families are emigrating to Afghanistan whenever opportunity offers.
There are rumours of fresh outbreaks in Ferghana.
Termez— July .—An arrival from Termez states that the garrison has
been reduced to less than half its normal strength, the troops abstracted having
been sent to the eastern most confines of the Russo-Afghan frontier. Nothing
confirmatory of this has been received so far.
Every Bolshevik post on the north bank of the river has an Afghan pest oppo-
I site it on the south bank. Trade with Afghanistan has totally stopped for the
present.
Kagan.— 10th and l ( :th July. — There are three ration dumps at Kagan con
taining in all some 50,000 poods of wheat. Quantities of this are moved towards
Samara where there is a famine and people are reduced to eating hides.
The condition of the troops is bad, many of them having no boots and being
compelled to go barefoot in consequence. Nevertheless conscription for the Bokha
ran army is in progress. Communists enlist voluntarily. Desertion is frequent
among the Bokharans and although apprehended deserters are shot.
Theatrical representations are given every night and lectures on unity delivered.
Hopes are still held out that all the world will soon accept Bolshevism.
The activities of Slier Muhammad Ivor and Mohiuddin are discussed. They are
reported to have started insurrections in Namengan and Margilan.
The Bokharans have now joined the ranks of those who pray for deliverance
by a foreign power. Their hatred of the Bolsheviks increases daily and is due in large
measure to the way they are robbed and prevented from leaving the country to
better their lot where Bolshevism is not knovn.
Ura Tiube— July .—There is no shortage in this district which contributes
much to the upkeep of less favoured areas. A number of famine refugees has been
drafted for maintenance on this centre.
The Military Komissar is Garrilov. City Governor, Saifu-ud-din.
The news of the rebels’ activities in the direction of Margilan is being everv-

There is no epidemic in this area.
Gorchakov.-— -Date net given. The rebels are very active near Andiian,
Namengan, Margilan, Kokand, and Jalalabad.
Sher Muhammad Kor, Khali Khwaja, Arif Bai, Yussaf Bai, and Dadashh
1 mad are the leaders of this-insurrectionary movement. They are credited with

Badam—Coal Fields 20 miles west of Margilan—27^ July.—Unto about
1st July the Bolsheviks had a garrison of 2,000 troops at this place. They were
attacked by rebels from the remnant of Argash and^Sher Muhammad Kor’s men.
