The floods.
The situation at Kati-Uzyako is a dangerous one, water increasing everywhere. The state
of affairs at Julek is even worse. Energetic measures have been adopted to cope with and to
avert the threatened danger. Labourers have been mobilized. On the success of their efforts
to strengthen the river bank depends the safety of the permanent-way and the movement of trains.
In view of the food situation being so serious, six wagon loads of wheat have been sent for
for the gangs working on the line-
in consequence of the continued high level of water in the Amu Darya (such has not been
reached since 1908)', great inundations have occurred in the vicinity of the town of Arikov. That
portion of the city contiguous to the railway station and hospital is submerged and there is cause
to fear the destruction of the less stable of the railway buildings. The railway and town adminis
trations have taken measures to strengthen the banks of the river and to divert the threatening
flood. The staff and employes of the railway are working to the point of exhaustion. A com
pany of sappers has been sent from Samarkand to assist.
According to information supplied by the Department of Communications in Turkestan,
dated 4th August, the floods at Charjui continue. Everywhere the water is increasing.
The Vegetable Bazar, the Station Square, and Bokhara Street are submerged. The railway
staff are beginning to feel the strain of the situation. So far, danger does not threaten the
permanent-way.
The flood which commenced on the 12th July and gathered force from day to day has caused
unheard of misery in Kokand. All the sowings of cotton have been destroyed once and for all.
The population is fleeing. More than fifteen villages have been overwhelmed. Communications
in Ferghana are interrupted in consequence of the inundation of the line for a distance of eight
versts.
About this item
- Content
The item consists of Part 1 of the subject file 1341/1921: 'Meshed Consular & Intelligence Diaries (1921-1922)'.
It contains numbered periodical (mainly weekly) reports relating to Persia [Iran], initially each called an 'Intelligence Summary' and later called a 'Meshed Intelligence Diary'. The reports cover the period of the week ending 1 January 1921 to the period ending 1 January 1923. They are initially issued by the British Military Mission, Meshed [Mashhad, also known as Mashad or Meshad], and later by the Military Attaché, Meshed. The intelligence summaries, and diaries, relate to political, foreign, military and diplomatic affairs in the locality and the neighbouring regions and are variously arranged under (chiefly) the following headings: 'Khorasan and North-East Persia'; 'Herat and Afghanistan'; 'Russian Turkistan'; 'Khorasan'; 'Cis-Frontier'; 'Trans-Frontier'; 'Afghanistan'; 'Bolshevik Garrisons'; 'Local'; 'Transcaspia'; 'Bokhara'; 'Tashkent'; 'Central Russia'; 'Khiva'; 'Ferghana'; 'General'; and 'Samarkand'. The summaries often include appendices which are usually extracts of local and national newspapers published in the regions and countries of interest, including Nabat , Rosta , Izvestia , Ittifaq-i-Islam , Bednota, Prolitarii , Sharq-i-Iran, and Pravda . Other appendices contain details of Bolshevik Garrisons in the region.
