etc. Great distress exists among the working classes. Troops have had a new
issue of clothing and sailors are expensively dressed but there is a great dearth of
clothes for other communities.
{Hi) There are about 1,000 women under training. Half are Muslims and half
Kussians. Some are expected to adopt army nursing and some to serve in the
police. They receive two hours’ instruction daily.
{iv) Theatres are numerous and free.
{v) Martial Law prevails.
(vi) An Usmanli officer, Nuri Pasha An Ottoman title used after the names of certain provincial governors, high-ranking officials and military commanders. , is at Baku and also some Usmanli troops.
[vii) Nariman Narimanov is known as the king of Baku.
I (viii) Impassioned speeches have lately been delivered at crowded meetings
calling for volunteers to assist the Angora Government. Those who complied
were paraded before the crowd, given good uniform and boots and a hearty send
off in detachments via Trebizond.
| (ix) There were some 30 Turkish Nationalist officers who made speeches on the
need of unity among the Islamic powers. Some departed with the above
volunteers who numbered about 5,000. Five left for Tabriz as propagandists
and eight were sent to Enzalli, Resht, and Astara for a similar purpose. Two
were sent to persuade Kuchik Khan of the benefits of pan-Islamism.
(x) The rendition of Kars by the Bolsheviks to the Angora Government was
being discussed in Baku.
(xi) It was announced on the 30th June that Anwar Pasha An Ottoman title used after the names of certain provincial governors, high-ranking officials and military commanders. was expected in

Krasnovodsk. July 10th .—The steamer service between Krasnovodsk is
one vessel every third day. and the average of trains from and to Askhabad is
one a day. Large consignments of wool and cotton bales arrive for transhipment
to western Caspian ports.
Askhabad. 7th to 14th July. — (i) The Afghan Consul has left for Bokhara
whence he hopes to return to Kabul.
(li) Processions of schoolboys and girls may be seen parading in the streets
preceded by a red flag and wearing red shirts and a red stripe down their trousers.
They include Turkmen children.
(m) I he Persian consul has no influence and is unable to protect his nationals.
{w) The Turkmen are very discontented and are greatly resenting the
compulsory education of their children.

It contains numbered periodical (mainly weekly) reports relating to Persia [Iran], initially each called an 'Intelligence Summary' and later called a 'Meshed Intelligence Diary'. The reports cover the period of the week ending 1 January 1921 to the period ending 1 January 1923. They are initially issued by the British Military Mission, Meshed [Mashhad, also known as Mashad or Meshad], and later by the Military Attaché, Meshed. The intelligence summaries, and diaries, relate to political, foreign, military and diplomatic affairs in the locality and the neighbouring regions and are variously arranged under (chiefly) the following headings: 'Khorasan and North-East Persia'; 'Herat and Afghanistan'; 'Russian Turkistan'; 'Khorasan'; 'Cis-Frontier'; 'Trans-Frontier'; 'Afghanistan'; 'Bolshevik Garrisons'; 'Local'; 'Transcaspia'; 'Bokhara'; 'Tashkent'; 'Central Russia'; 'Khiva'; 'Ferghana'; 'General'; and 'Samarkand'. The summaries often include appendices which are usually extracts of local and national newspapers published in the regions and countries of interest, including Nabat , Rosta , Izvestia , Ittifaq-i-Islam , Bednota, Prolitarii , Sharq-i-Iran, and Pravda . Other appendices contain details of Bolshevik Garrisons in the region.
