The Persian authorities are aware
of the reputation enjoyed by the place, and have probably taken
their own measures regarding it.
Farzi, who was a confessed Bolshevik spy and who has been in
Police custody here some four months, has been released. He is
said to have received a subsidy from the Bolsheviks and to be
about to return to Russia.
It is reported the Bolsheviks intend to conscribe labour in
Persia to the number of 40,000 for service in their mines etc.
The news has been well received by the loca l poor.
The ex-Oovernor General, Uuwam-fcs-Sultanah, has been sent to
Teheran by carriage, and under escort of 50 gendarmes. He was
taken ill en route and has been allowed to halt at Nishapur.
The report that his family had preceded him was incorrect. The
whole of the stock and produce of his estate at Rui Khaf has
been siezed by order of the Meshed authorities. The Governor
of Turshiz and Sarakhs have been brought to Meshed in custody.
The Governor of Turbat has been released. Mirza Hussein Quli
j liazilbash of the Afghan Imbassy at Teheran is reported to have
t been interviewed during the week, and to have stated that the
change of cabinet at Teheran was detrimental to ifghan interest*
Several schemes beneficial to Perso-Aignan affairs had been
agreed to, tat altered condition had caused their non-fruition.
He stated that on return from Kahnl he expected to be appointed
to Meshed in
the interests of his Government.
It was communicated by H.M.Minister at Teheran that the
CWnor General designate had gone to Besht. Since his pass
age throughthe line the Cossacks who had occupied the positions
vacated by the British had been fired on the Bolsheviks. The
Persian Prime Minister telegraphed to the Russian Minister
designate, then between Meshed and Teheran, ordering him
to halt pending an explanation of this violation of the

The intelligence summaries, and diaries, relate to political, foreign, military and diplomatic affairs in the locality and the neighbouring regions and are variously arranged under (chiefly) the following headings: 'Khorasan and North-East Persia'; 'Herat and Afghanistan'; 'Russian Turkistan'; 'Khorasan'; 'Cis-Frontier'; 'Trans-Frontier'; 'Afghanistan'; 'Bolshevik Garrisons'; 'Local'; 'Transcaspia'; 'Bokhara'; 'Tashkent'; 'Central Russia'; 'Khiva'; 'Ferghana'; 'General'; and 'Samarkand'. The summaries often include appendices which are usually extracts of local and national newspapers published in the regions and countries of interest, including Nabat , Rosta , Izvestia , Ittifaq-i-Islam , Bednota, Prolitarii , Sharq-i-Iran, and Pravda . Other appendices contain details of Bolshevik Garrisons in the region.
