The protracted and stiff resistance put up by the ex Amit is
causing the Bolsheviks to suspect outside assistance. Excesses of
Bolshevik soldiery in Bokhara re reporter to have caused frequent
suicides. Latterly men of the Bed toy have not been allowed in
side the town after dark which has resulted in an improvement.
SAMABKALO . The same tale of want, destitution, and spoliation of
the rural population comes from Samarkand. The presence
of 20 Indians is noted, probably awaiting their turn at the school
at Tashkent whither, the informant says, others have preceded
those still in Samarkand.
A formation called the u .khranii Guard” is responsible for
commandeering supplied from the countryside. Scarcity is driving
numbers of villagers to migrate in the direction of Skka Bagh and
Eat irclii •
In the first week of April no trains arrived from the direc
tion of Tashkent due, it was popularly supposed, to strike^ among
the railway staff.
An alarm was rinsed of a pending attack on Samarkand by Tors
Jan, uncle of the ex Amir, A reconnaissance in force went out in
the direction of Shahar-i—Sabz to meet the threatened movement.

The intelligence summaries, and diaries, relate to political, foreign, military and diplomatic affairs in the locality and the neighbouring regions and are variously arranged under (chiefly) the following headings: 'Khorasan and North-East Persia'; 'Herat and Afghanistan'; 'Russian Turkistan'; 'Khorasan'; 'Cis-Frontier'; 'Trans-Frontier'; 'Afghanistan'; 'Bolshevik Garrisons'; 'Local'; 'Transcaspia'; 'Bokhara'; 'Tashkent'; 'Central Russia'; 'Khiva'; 'Ferghana'; 'General'; and 'Samarkand'. The summaries often include appendices which are usually extracts of local and national newspapers published in the regions and countries of interest, including Nabat , Rosta , Izvestia , Ittifaq-i-Islam , Bednota, Prolitarii , Sharq-i-Iran, and Pravda . Other appendices contain details of Bolshevik Garrisons in the region.
