very appreciatively of the considerate treatment they have
received at the hands of the British authorities during the Arab
revolt. This testimony is especially useful on account of the
many calumnious statements that were disseminated in Meshed not
very long eg© when the British were accused 1*©* bombarding the *ji
shrine and committing other outrages against the religious sus- ,
ceptibilities of Muslims,
The member of the Afghan Legation at Teheran, Mirza Kassan
v^uli t^asalbash, left Meshed on the 29th April, He is described as
being an arddnt Pan-Islamist. He gave an "At Home" on the day of
Ehabbarat at which there was a large attendance, especially of
officials from the Shrine. He spoke in terms of eulogy of the Amir
of Afghanistan, with especial reference to his sympathy for and
friendliness towards those of the Shiah persuasion. One of those
present expressed the hope that before long the Islamic powers
would become knit into one concrete whole but another rejoined
that whatever might be said of the political union of the Muslim
powers could be believed but that the union of Shiahs and Sunnis
was an impossibility. 'Tk© Mullas have not the capacity to bring
such about. On the other hand they work in diametrically opposite
directions.
The resurrection of the Adalat party in Transcaspia and
Turkestan was not wholly unexpected. Nothing tangible is afforded
by news from that part which would give some idea of the
reasons dictating this revival. It may be that the Bolsheviks are
disappointed in the hopes they had formed of gathering Persia
into the Communist fold, and that the political changes recently
introduced, commencing at Teheran, are not at all along the lines
they bad plotted out for her. Whatever the reasons be one thing
is incontrovertible and that is the activities of this party are
directly against Persia and in the interests of and for the
furtherance of Bolshevik schemes. The attitude the Persian
Government will take up as regards this party and its emissaries
to Persia remains to be seen. An early exposition of that
About this item
- Content
The item consists of Part 1 of the subject file 1341/1921: 'Meshed Consular & Intelligence Diaries (1921-1922)'.
It contains numbered periodical (mainly weekly) reports relating to Persia [Iran], initially each called an 'Intelligence Summary' and later called a 'Meshed Intelligence Diary'. The reports cover the period of the week ending 1 January 1921 to the period ending 1 January 1923. They are initially issued by the British Military Mission, Meshed [Mashhad, also known as Mashad or Meshad], and later by the Military Attaché, Meshed. The intelligence summaries, and diaries, relate to political, foreign, military and diplomatic affairs in the locality and the neighbouring regions and are variously arranged under (chiefly) the following headings: 'Khorasan and North-East Persia'; 'Herat and Afghanistan'; 'Russian Turkistan'; 'Khorasan'; 'Cis-Frontier'; 'Trans-Frontier'; 'Afghanistan'; 'Bolshevik Garrisons'; 'Local'; 'Transcaspia'; 'Bokhara'; 'Tashkent'; 'Central Russia'; 'Khiva'; 'Ferghana'; 'General'; and 'Samarkand'. The summaries often include appendices which are usually extracts of local and national newspapers published in the regions and countries of interest, including Nabat , Rosta , Izvestia , Ittifaq-i-Islam , Bednota, Prolitarii , Sharq-i-Iran, and Pravda . Other appendices contain details of Bolshevik Garrisons in the region.
