Recruit log for the gendarme force proceeds satisfactorily. It
is thought that it may be a little indiscriminate at present, if
so, there is danger of undesirables becoming enrolled, as, for
instance, Bolshevik agents* fhe local political croakers shake
their heals over this expansion of the gendarmerie and say that
that of the Revenue will not proceed pari passa — that when all
the money extracted from the rich has been eaten up there will not
be the wherewithal to maintain the force.
Several instances of interference in British affairs on the
part of gendarmes and others in outlying places have occurred
lately. B B.M.Consul General has made prompt representations to the
Military Governor General who has shown the utmost readiness to
check these abuses of authority.

Bifc r MRGM» f A newsletter dated the UOth April states all is quiet on
the frontier. In Mazenderan it is hoped that the fighting between
the Government forces and the son of Amir Muyyaid will soon come
to an end as his supporters, the Sawad Kohis, show a disposition
to bow to superior force.
Negotiations with the Bolshevik trad.© representatives present
in the vessel which transported them from Baku were still
progressing at the time of writing the newsletter. The Governor
of Astrabad arrived in person in this connection and what on board
for a conference.
There is seme degree of trouble between Bolsheviks and their
Turkmen neighbours at Hussein Uuli. It appears that a Turkmen who
had used abusive language to the Bolsheviks was assassinated at, it
is believed, the instigation of the latter. This affair has led to
strained relations between the two people, the Bolsheviks removing
themselves from the vicinity of the Turkmen and going to the coast.
