In the year 1918 the Turkman leader was absolute ruler of
the Khanate of Khiva, He had plased on the throne 3aiad Abdu
Abdulla, the unole of 3aiad Asfendiar whom he had mrdered.
In tiie autumn of the same year he invaded the Amu Darya
district, without meeting with any impediment, for at that
time there were no Russian troops either in the Khiwan

Khanate or in the Amu Darya district.
At the end of 1919, in anticipation of a second attempt at
invasion of the right bank of the Amu Darya by Juneid Khan
and in response to an invitation from the Young Khivan Re
volutionaries detachments of the Red Army were despatched to
two placoH on the left bank of the river where seven Turkman
tribes had united imder the leadership of Kosh Uuhawaad,

Bakhshi, and Ohulan Ali f They raised the red flag of re
bellion on the 2nd February 1920. Saiad Abdulla, in presence
of two to three thousand persons, solemnly renounced tiie
throne and transferred his authority to a provisional govern
ment of five persons.
In April 1920 tile Kurultai was constituted and in con
nection therewith a Council was elected con listing oi 11
Uzbegs and 4 Turkmen (Kosh Mohammad, dakhshi, (Jhalan Ali,
and Jan Muhammad). Practically all the Turkman tribes re
cognised the new rule ami the Russian troops rawined only to
sweep up the irreconcilable detachments of that enemy of the
Soviet Government, Juneid Khan. Thus the outcome of things
encouraged the hope of a speedy paoiiioation of the Young
