CQUHTKIMjSN: The British troops which came to our Northern
Provinces on account of the international situation created by
the 3reat iVar are now leaving us and returning to their own
countiy. All will agree that these troops have rendered noble
services to Persia. The greatest of the lessons they have
taught us during their presence among us has been that one of
an invincible martial spirit for the protection of our beloved
country - that others should not benefit by our weakness and
should not encroach on our holy soil.
The departure of these troops is a vivid prooJi of the k
gooa faith of our neighbour and shows she casts no covetous eye'
on ^ ersia. We Must strive to maintain friendly relations with
her and at the same time our independence*
I am rejoiced that such a happy event has occurred durirg
my period o± office. I am proud of my soldiers who responded
to ray appeal and occupied the trenches from Manjil to Hakal
evacuated by the departing liritish troops* For a fortnight
now have they occupied the foremost defensive lines with great
credit and watchfulness.
It is plain that the new-born spirit of patriotism and
love of arms now manifest in the Persians will make them shed
their last drop of blood for the integrity and freedom of their
country.
Our northern neighbour who has joined the circle of our
friends is sending his respected representative here. He will
arrive in a few days.
There is now no danger for Persia. Our representatives
have gone to Crilan. They have reached Hesht and are discussing
local matters ith the tribal chiefs. It is hoped they will
solve satisfactorily the various matters at issue.
I am assured that when difficulties in that direction
have been solved our soldiers will gain a period of rest and
About this item
- Content
The item consists of Part 1 of the subject file 1341/1921: 'Meshed Consular & Intelligence Diaries (1921-1922)'.
It contains numbered periodical (mainly weekly) reports relating to Persia [Iran], initially each called an 'Intelligence Summary' and later called a 'Meshed Intelligence Diary'. The reports cover the period of the week ending 1 January 1921 to the period ending 1 January 1923. They are initially issued by the British Military Mission, Meshed [Mashhad, also known as Mashad or Meshad], and later by the Military Attaché, Meshed. The intelligence summaries, and diaries, relate to political, foreign, military and diplomatic affairs in the locality and the neighbouring regions and are variously arranged under (chiefly) the following headings: 'Khorasan and North-East Persia'; 'Herat and Afghanistan'; 'Russian Turkistan'; 'Khorasan'; 'Cis-Frontier'; 'Trans-Frontier'; 'Afghanistan'; 'Bolshevik Garrisons'; 'Local'; 'Transcaspia'; 'Bokhara'; 'Tashkent'; 'Central Russia'; 'Khiva'; 'Ferghana'; 'General'; and 'Samarkand'. The summaries often include appendices which are usually extracts of local and national newspapers published in the regions and countries of interest, including Nabat , Rosta , Izvestia , Ittifaq-i-Islam , Bednota, Prolitarii , Sharq-i-Iran, and Pravda . Other appendices contain details of Bolshevik Garrisons in the region.
