109. Bandargaz .—A report dated 7th April states there was no fresh news-
from the frontier. The Turkomans were quiet and had ceased fighting upon
inflicting a reverse upon the gendarmes who retreated. The Persian Govern
ment has failed to recover the revenue due from their Turkoman subjects.
The fighting in Mazenderam was continuing at the time of report, resulting
in all round success of the Government forces with whom the people are in
accord.
Arrivals from Baku speak of some improvement in the condition of life
there. Persians are enjoying comparative freedom in trade and are not now
subjected to Bolshevik oppression. On the other hand, the latter are said to
spare no savage treatment for their own people.
Bajnurd .—Rumours in Meshed and reports from Quchan are very persist
ent in declaring the arrest of the

Leader of a tribe or a polity; also refers to a military rank or title given to a commander of an army or division.
Mu’aziz, but Meshed authority discredits
all such.
A correspondent writes on the 9th April that the sole preoccupation in 1
Transcaspia is how to support existence until the next harvest. He adds that j
people there are at a loss to forecast the future owing to the insufficiency of the
last sowing.
Gurgan-Turkman affairs are becoming complicated. The Ak Atta Bai are
gradually attracting other tribes to themselves politically- The Goklan and
Yomud Charpa Turkmans, who detest the Russians and who were entrusted with
the 1916 expedition, on the other hand have refused to identify themselves with
the Ak Ata Bai and are preparing for war. The Goklans intend to seek assist
ance from the

is able to do in this direction, even supposing the Persian Gov
ernment were to permit him such a course of action. It would seem that the Ak
Ata Bai are being assisted from outside sources as they are strongly armed and
have great quantities of boxes of ammunition, but neither guns or machine
guns.
The Deputy Governor of Gunbad-i-Qubus who fled to A star abaci for help has
not returned to Gunbad. He promised to return with 600 cavalry, but instead of
this augmentation the Hajibir and Raman sowars of Mehedi Shah fled from
Gunbad-i-Qabus and are now occupying themselves foraging for the Ak Ata Bai.
Mehedi Shah remains alone in Gunbad with the gendarmes and those Yomuds
who are faithful to him.
Jiristan, No report has been received from this frontier post during the
current week.,
' Bajgiran—The correspondent at this point reports reciprocal entertain
ment between Persian and Russian frontier officials, the movements of Ivhudo
Verdi, etc. . . .
Quchan -—Reports principally pertain to the arrival of the Russian Minister
designate and will be found elsewhere in this Summary.- The nioyements of
Khudo have also been communicated through this centre and will oe fount
below.
Darraqaz .—A detailed report has been received relating to the mnrder of
the late Governor, which, if true in essentials, it ascribes to /abardast Khan and
Mursal Sadiqov. The latter was the first to fire on the deceased wounding him
in the thigh, and the murder was completed by the latter who shot the victim
through the head. Armed retainers thereon riddled the body with bullets. Za-
bardast Khan sacked the. house of the murdered man and also of his confidential
agent. Sheikh Yussaf Khan. He is now the de facto Governor of the sub-province
though his uncle, Mansur-ul-Mulk, has been nominally appointed thereto by the
authorities at Meshed.
The Khudo Verdi adventure, commencing last summer, has at last reached
a conclusion with the surrender of the chief protagonist with a small following
to the

of Bujnurd and his apprehension by a posse of gendarmes. .
He had moved from Durringer to Imamquli and Zawaran, both of which
places he was reported to have looted, and arrived at the hill village of Ravard,
some 13 miha due north of Quchan. Thence he moved towards fehirwan and
About this item
- Content
The item consists of Part 1 of the subject file 1341/1921: 'Meshed Consular & Intelligence Diaries (1921-1922)'.
It contains numbered periodical (mainly weekly) reports relating to Persia [Iran], initially each called an 'Intelligence Summary' and later called a 'Meshed Intelligence Diary'. The reports cover the period of the week ending 1 January 1921 to the period ending 1 January 1923. They are initially issued by the British Military Mission, Meshed [Mashhad, also known as Mashad or Meshad], and later by the Military Attaché, Meshed. The intelligence summaries, and diaries, relate to political, foreign, military and diplomatic affairs in the locality and the neighbouring regions and are variously arranged under (chiefly) the following headings: 'Khorasan and North-East Persia'; 'Herat and Afghanistan'; 'Russian Turkistan'; 'Khorasan'; 'Cis-Frontier'; 'Trans-Frontier'; 'Afghanistan'; 'Bolshevik Garrisons'; 'Local'; 'Transcaspia'; 'Bokhara'; 'Tashkent'; 'Central Russia'; 'Khiva'; 'Ferghana'; 'General'; and 'Samarkand'. The summaries often include appendices which are usually extracts of local and national newspapers published in the regions and countries of interest, including Nabat , Rosta , Izvestia , Ittifaq-i-Islam , Bednota, Prolitarii , Sharq-i-Iran, and Pravda . Other appendices contain details of Bolshevik Garrisons in the region.
