INTELLIGENCE SUMMARY FOR THE WEEK ENDING THE 15th JANUARY 1921,
No. 3.
Khorasan and North=East Persia.
17. 'Frontiers .—According to a report from Bandar Gaz dated the 26th
December the Atabai and Jafarbai have become reconciled and the frontier
in that vicinity was generally quiet. Qarim Khan Hujabar-ad-Daulah
who was arrested and banished to Sari during the regime of Vosugh-ad-
Daulah and subsequently permitted to return, is reported to have made
overtures and proffered his services to the Bolsheviks at Askhabad who
are considering their reply.
Very severe weather has set in round Bujnurd and an interruption in
communication is expected.
The Bolshevik commissars who recently accompanied the Persian Con
sul at Askhabad, Nadir Mirza, to Lutfabad to arrange the cession of
cereals behaved convivially and expatiated freely on their political doctrines.
The Mission representative reports that considerable effect was produced on
those Persians with whom they came in contact. Nadir Mirza with Bolshevik
representatives is expected at Bajgiran for further arrangements regarding
supplies.
Colonel Denisov has been deputed to Sarakhs by Bulatov to arrange the
purchase for cession of supplies in that neighbourhood.
The Bolshevik sowars with two machine-guns despatched towards Nauruz-
abad (B.ussian) have returned to Russian Sarakhs. The action was motived by
fear of an Afghan reprisal from Dahna-i-Zulfiqar for the lifting of sheep by
Baluchis and Jamshadis in that neighbourhood.
The apprehension proved to have been baseless.
18. Local .—The impending closing of the Imperial Bank branch and
departure of the American Mission and Russian Consul-General have still
further added to the depression and anxiety of the well-to-do.
These express fear of the poorer and more disorderly elements who are
supposed to be marking down the houses of the wealthy for future action.
Herat and Afghanistan.
19. Current affairs .—Although several sources from Turkistan state that
Jamshadi raids on Afghanistan continue to occur no intelligence of these has
been received from Herat up to the 6 th instant.
( 2 ) There have been various arrivals and departures of assorted Russians,
viz. Departures. 31st December. Bolshevik ‘Consul from Maimana for
Russian territory.
3rd January. Six Russians with Turk interpreter who arrived from Kabul
via Kandahar on previous day for Russian territory.
Arrivals.— January. A Russian man with four women. These are said
to be wives of Russians in Kabul, while the man is escort or servant. One
Russian and two Persians brought under escort from the Afghan-Russian
frontier. The man is supposed to be a Menshevik refugee and all three will
probably be deported to Persia.
The two Russians who recently arrived with three women are reported to
be a clerk for Yulusov and a wireless operator for Kabul.
Preparations have been made to receive another party of guests on the
frontier.
(3) Two-sealed boxes have been entrusted by the Naib-ul-Hukumah to a
lecial Afghan courier for delivery to the Afghan envoy at Tashkent. -It
