Appendix 2.
Extracts from the “ Ittifaq-i-Islam ”, Eerat, dated 28th December 1920,
No. 18.
Contents.
1. Announcement of change in Editorial chair of the paper, owing to
former editor suffering from “ pain in the legs”.
2. Repudiation of statements published in the English Press, as pointed
out by the Tehran newspaper “ Rahnama.”
Evidently some English paper had said that Sepah-Salar Mohammad
Nadir Khan had gained so much influence over the Amir that latter is doing
practically anything former tells him. It is now pointed out that “ such is
not the case ” and that Amir is exercising his personal influence over his
people, who are devoted to him, etc.
Paper requests the Tehran paper not to waste time in future, even to refer
to the usual “ nonsense ” one sees in English papers.
3. Various items of foreign and local news.
Extracts from the “ Ittifaq-i-Islam”, Herat, dated 4th January 1921,
No. 19.
Contents.
1. Various items of foreign and local news.
2. A brief article mentions that for some time past now the British have
been publishing in their papers, articles referring to their policy towards
Afghanistan. Public in Afghanistan do not take any notice of such articles
and ignore them, but Persians are likely to believe them.
Editor expresses an opinion that Persian papers are probably forced to
publish British Communiques and articles in their columns, as no decent paper
would willingly insert such nonsense. r
About this item
- Content
The item consists of Part 1 of the subject file 1341/1921: 'Meshed Consular & Intelligence Diaries (1921-1922)'.
It contains numbered periodical (mainly weekly) reports relating to Persia [Iran], initially each called an 'Intelligence Summary' and later called a 'Meshed Intelligence Diary'. The reports cover the period of the week ending 1 January 1921 to the period ending 1 January 1923. They are initially issued by the British Military Mission, Meshed [Mashhad, also known as Mashad or Meshad], and later by the Military Attaché, Meshed. The intelligence summaries, and diaries, relate to political, foreign, military and diplomatic affairs in the locality and the neighbouring regions and are variously arranged under (chiefly) the following headings: 'Khorasan and North-East Persia'; 'Herat and Afghanistan'; 'Russian Turkistan'; 'Khorasan'; 'Cis-Frontier'; 'Trans-Frontier'; 'Afghanistan'; 'Bolshevik Garrisons'; 'Local'; 'Transcaspia'; 'Bokhara'; 'Tashkent'; 'Central Russia'; 'Khiva'; 'Ferghana'; 'General'; and 'Samarkand'. The summaries often include appendices which are usually extracts of local and national newspapers published in the regions and countries of interest, including Nabat , Rosta , Izvestia , Ittifaq-i-Islam , Bednota, Prolitarii , Sharq-i-Iran, and Pravda . Other appendices contain details of Bolshevik Garrisons in the region.
