This item consists of copies of correspondence, minutes, and consultations cited in, or enclosed with, political letters from the Government of Bombay From c. 1668-1858, the East India Company’s administration in the city of Bombay [Mumbai] and western India. From 1858-1947, a subdivision of the British Raj. It was responsible for British relations with the Gulf and Red Sea regions. . These political letters appear in IOR/F/4/2174/105546. The item concerns the capture by Shaik Abdoolah bin Ahmed [Shaikh ‘Abdullāh bin Aḥmad Āl Khalīfah], the former Ruler of Bahrein [Bahrain], of a ship belonging to a merchant from Bahrein, and his subsequent arrival in Koweit [Kuwait], where he has been given asylum by the Ruler, Shaik Jabir ul Subah [Shaikh Jābir I bin ‘Abdullāh Āl Ṣabāḥ]. Hennell is concerned about the implications of this for Shaik Abdoolah’s dispute with Shaik Mahomed bin Khaleefa [Shaikh Muḥammad bin Khalīfah Āl Khalīfah], the current ruler of Bahrein, and seeks to intervene to manage the situation. The item includes translations of letters from Hennell to Shaik Jabir, Shaik Abdoolah, and Shaik Mahomed, as well as translations of replies from Shaik Jabir and Shaik Abdoolah.
